Horse Health Problems Knowledge Base

what are the most common health problems you can expect with a horse? i have 2 two year old paint fillys. they are in general good health. diet is free range forage on pasture/fields; receiving plain oats twice a day, plenty of water. i just want to know what i should look for that a novice(like me!) wouldn't notice right away. they are hosed down twice a day(we live in southwest kansas--over 100 degree days abound in the summer right now) and they love it--and it is ice cold well water but they stand right there waiting for it...lol! they have both had their feet trimmed minimally. thanks for any advice!
How dangerous is a displaced intestine in a horse? The stable manager just called and told me that the horse who had colic last night was now diagnosed with a displaced intestine. She said they were trying to treat him with fluids, and if he didn't improve in three hours or so, they would ship him to Ohio State. ): I don't know a lot about horse health problems because we've been very lucky and hadn't had many. Please tell me if he has a good chance of survival or not.
Horse Health? I wormed my horse about a month ago with Zimecterin Gold. Every once in awhile my horse get's diharrea. If I wormed him, what could cause this problem?
help with horse health? i have a 12 year old mare that i have had for about 3 years now and have never had any health problems with her but the past week i have noticed hives on her. they started out on her withers and shoulders and then spreaded all over her body. i thought she just had hives and another horse i have had got them before so i fed him flax. well i was going to try that with her then today i noticed that she is losing hair around her face. there is an animal that has been coming in the pasture that looks like it has the mange but i havent been able to kill it. could she have gotten that from the other animal and would that cause the hives? she isnt acting like anything is bothering her. i would take her to the vet but dont have the money right now. any help would bt very much appreciated.
My horse has an eye health problem? this winter my horse suddenly started losing the hair around her left eye. she's only 9 yrs old and hasn't had any health problems before. the hair has been lost about an 1" circumference. the weird part is it's almost perfectly circular and stays about 1" circumference the entire way around the eye. we live in Alaska so it's winter here right now. could the dryness be getting to her skin? could it be a lack of minerals? my grandpa is getting us a wormer(we havent wormed her for 4 months) and a salt block wen he comes down this weekend. she's a paint, and the eye she's losing the fur was partly white(but she's mostly brown). could her genetics have anything to do with tht? im trying to put some pictures on, idk if they'll work... thnkx!! http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=310573&id=1155057475 http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=310574&id=1155057475 http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=310575&id=1155057475 the other problem is the nearest large animal vet is about 3-4 hours away from us...and the nearest vet (about 20 min away) is stricktly small animals.(he's had bad experiences with horses so he gave that up)
What are some common health problems that pmu horses suffer from? I am thinkin about adopting a few pmu horses sometime in the future. I have been considering it for a while now, and really like the idea, but recently I was reading about it and there was one person that said they had adopted one through Serenity Acres in Silvercity, NM. They said that theirs had to be put down for some reason or another, im not sure what, and now i am worried. This is the resue that I would like to go through, and i know that they work with a few different ranches and each horse will have its own set of problems from years of neglect and a long trip from canada, but what is the likely hood that I will get horses that may need to be put down because of some aweful injury or disease or something. I am not asking just to avoid vet bills, I am just wandering how likely so I can be somewhat "prepared" for that possibillity, so I'm not totally heart broken in that case.
Horse Drivers!? I would be curious on your experience and opinion: What are typical horse health problems in driving horses? Are there specific health problems which occur mostly in driving horses? (Lamenesses, injuries, skin sores from harness, etc.) What did you experience? How did you solve it? Thanks for every advice or story! Driving horse = horse in harness put to a cart, carriage, sleigh, etc.
Are Republicans just beating a dead horse on Health care? With their disastrous loss, is moving on a problem? They are done with the Death panels and onto the great cost of the bill and how our the non-biased office of the budget is wrong when they say the bill saves us trillions in debt. Apparently they have not yet heard that most Americans want to move on to jobs? Will they just beat this dead horse till everyone no longer cares what they say? They have lost credibility do they want to risk irrelevancy with this approach? Americans do not like sore losers.
Health Problem in a horse????? What exactly is stringhalt, and how bad is it? As an example: http://horsetopia.horse-for-sale.org/classifieds/ad375466 would you still buy a horse like this, who is seems well trained with potential, but has a mild case of stringhalt??? thanks so much!!!
Is horse racing cruel? Are the horses too young? So many "off the track" horses have health problems related to the intense training and demands placed on them before they are fully developed. Why do they say horses should be 3 or 4 years old before they should start training for jumping, dressage, etc. and yet they begin racing at the age of 2? Is this a form of cruelty to animals?
How do I stop my horse from cribbing? My horse is constantly cribbing, i have read about how many health problems that can cause him, and i'm starting to get worried. I tried one of those cribbing collars, but hI don't want to leave that collar on him 24 hours a day... are there any other options?
Will a fixed hernia affect a grown horse riding ability and health? I am looking at buying a yearling filly that had a hernia. She had it fixed but i was wondering if it would cause problems later. Is it going to affect her performance (riding), diet, or personality. Is it something that can flare up and cause other medical problems later (colic) ect. Thank you, any information will help. Thanks! :)
Horse Has eaten Dog Kibble - is this a problem? Woke up this morning to find my 3 mini horses into the container of dog kibble. Is this a problem for the horses health? Thank-you!
I am a intermediate horse-back rider and am going to get a horse soon, which one? I want a horse that rides, western, english, and can jump with a good personality and good jeans ( no genetic health problems) and is lean, not too bulky. what kind of horse is right for me?
How much do you think horse insurance would cost? How much do you think horse insurance would cost? i just want a rough guess before getting a quote. My horse is valued around 150k, and is successfully shown at 4' hunters. i want full coverage, medical, liability, etc. hes 9 and has never had any health problems before. Can you give me a rough estimate?
Is 23 too old to jump a horse? So, I have a grade horse who is 23 and lately I have been thinking about trying to jump him. Nothing competitively or anything, just occasionally. I think it would be fun to try it. He is in great health, considering his age of course, no health problems, joints move easy. So, my question is would 23 be too old to jump a horse. It would never be too high or too hard, maybe a foot high. Also, he's not entirely new to jumping. When loping through the desert, he will occasionally jump over small bushes or such. I know it isn't like jumping over actual jumps, but at least he has jumped something.
Is it possible to get an old out of shape horse back into shape? I bought a horse that is 15. He is overweight but frisky and willing. He does not have any serious health problems. Is it possible to get him back in shape? I figured i would start slow and work my way up... exercising him 3 times a week doing walk/trot stuff and eventually canter stuff... Your input is appreciated.
Why does my horse have a certain Odor? My horse is an Appaloosa/Warmblood cross. Most horses have a nice horsey smell, but Klondike's stink is like a body odor that smells terrible! We're trying to figure out what causes it. If you know anything about the breed traits that might cause this, or health problems, help please!
is it a good idea to donate your horse to a horse welfare foundation ? i have 5 horses that are all over the age of twenty and some have health problems including founder and ringbone. we cant afford them anymore. my mom laughed at the idea and said that they already have to much horse and don't care for them very well. heres the website:http://www.equineadoption.com/donate.htm
Is this a good age for my first horse? I am thinking of getting a 20 year old mare thats up for adoption for my first horse. She is trained and everything. And has no health problems yet. I just wanted to know if that sounded like a good age for my first horse. Shes a thoroughbred. Plus ill be leaving for college in 5-6 years so my parents would have to take care of her afterwards, and god knows they cant ride.
What age is it okay to ride a quarter horse without causing future damage to his back? I know quarter horses can be started and ridden much sooner than other breeds, but how much sooner? Have been working on my 2.5yr old gelding, he's recently been broken and this week he's being ridden(for very short periods of time) and understands commands both verbally and by the mouth. he's 15.1hh with no known health problems.
What kind of companion for my horse? He's about 15hh and is on his own in a big field - I think it's like 2/3 acres. The field beside me is owned by a girl my age but she wouldn't even consider sharing a field when we first approached her about it. He gets along with the horses in the other field. Should I look around for a companion horse or just get sheep or something? It's just that I've heard a lot of companion horses have health problems, and we really can't be paying out thousands each month for vets.. He's also used to being kept at a livery yard (I left years ago because of the constant b'tching behind my back about my old pony), so I guess he'd be pretty lonely..
What are the best, most helthy oils or products to use for shedding a horse when nothing else will work? I have a 20 year old quarter horse that is in very good condition. She is at a healthy weight and she is on a regular worming schedule. She has no health problems and is up to date on all of her shots. Everything is great, but she just wont shed at all!! I have tried everything: slick n easy block, shedding blade, curry comb, giving her a bath, but the one thing I havent tried yet is products or oils. If anybody knows any thing that works great but will not affect her health it would be great if you told me...thanks!!
What can cause a horse to not shed it's winter coat? I have several horses all of whom have shed out their winter coats except one. He is a 10 year old gelding with no apparent health problems but he is still just a fuzzy as if it was still February. Any ideas as to why? His winter coat was not unusually long and he has not lost any muscle tone or body condition.
Minor health problems and immunity? I am 24 years old about to turn 25, and I have been experiencing random minor health problems. Every week or so I have an issue that comes (what I think) directly from my stressful lifestyle; working at a busy restaurant, full time college accounting student, and an internship plus planning a wedding. Some of my problems include one week I had shingles, this week I have a stye and sinus problems, another week I'll have a weird flare up of inflammation under my eye (on the skin) and then random sore throats and what not. Seems to me that all of these are caused by a crappy diet and my stressful lifestyle. Before I started working at the restaurant and working my tail off in college, I was healthy as a horse. Does anyone have any comments or suggestions on how I can boost my immune system? Should I start taking more vitamins and minerals? HELP!
Serious doggy health problems? One of our dogs is very old (17 years and she was abused in her first 4 years which negatively impacted her health) she is partially deaf (she doesn't appear to hear us but when we call for treats she 'magically' knows whats going on). She too skinny. I can see two or three of her ribs a little bit but I can see the top of her hip bones kinda well. But she's skinnier than she used to be. She has severe arthritis, spends most of her day sleeping her spine is more curved toward the ground than I think it should be and she used to go for days without eating. We discovered this was due to bad teeth so when she goes all day without eating the soft food we give her we give her special soft turkey, roast beef or hotdogs that she likes. She was gradually getting fatter until about a month or so ago when I left for a skiing trip. While I was gone she wouldn't eat and when I came home it took me two days to get her to eat again(my dad was home but she gets upset when I leave which I know now). She's gotten her weight back up but she's extremely stubborn and will only eat what she wants when she wants. (it makes me angry). We've have her checked out and she's not in any pain just old. Any suggestions on how to get her weight so that I can't see those two top hip bones (near the sacral vertebrae) or how to help her in any of the other health problems I've described? (should we give her Msm for the arthritis? thats what we give our horse and it works for him). Like I said she's not in any pain and she still has alot of life in her eyes. She'll run after coyotes when she sees them in the backyard but she doesn't make it as far or as fast and she usually comes back wheezing( she had a lung thing a couple months ago when it was colder that resulted in breathing problems so she still has those attacks sometimes when she gets too excited (i.e extreme movements of inhaling and exhaling where I can see all of her ribs because she's making such exagerated inhaling movements.)).
So how does an experienced rider who has recovered from some health problems get back in the saddle again? I've spent over two years of watching my horses convert feed into fertilizer, just chomping at the bit (pardon the pun) to get back into it! I know you "just do it" but dang it, it's just not happening. I've been looking forward to riding season since winter, and I just keep finding reasons not to go...beginning to wonder if maybe it's my subconsicous mind at work...
Horse Vet Check -- what are some of the things that should be checked before buying a horse? Does anyone have advice regarding the health check of a horse before purchase? What are some of the important things that should be checked? Also, have you run into problems with the purchase of a horse that you wish you would have known about before the purchase? I am considering the purchase of a horse and would appreciate any experience you could share so that I (and others) can avoid making the same mistakes. An additional question: Should I be concerned if the horse likes to grind its teeth while working on the bit? This seems like just a bad habit as the teeth have been regularly floated, but I just worry that there might be health and/or performance problems as a result of this habit. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks so much for your help !!!
Having problems w/ a older horse? Hello, I am taking care of a 27 year old Tb/draft cross. He has had so health problems. He has been in a trailer fire when he was younger and 1 of his lungs doesn't function as well so he cough every now and then and does a cough and fart thing over and over. Anyway for the past few months he has been very lame when riding to the right but he is fine on the left side. Even when you start to turn right he bops his head around and refuses to keep into the gait. So @ first I thought he was just stiff cause he is getting older. But I don't think it's that anymore when I ask him to canter he always goes into the wrong lead so I assumed that he is lame so is there any suggestions I will ask any ?'s Thank You!
When buying a draft horse, what kind of things should I be aware of? I am looking to buy a draft horse and I would like to know of certain things that I need to be aware of when I am looking at the horse in person. What kind of health problems are they prone to? What should I look out for? How might there confirmation be diffrent from a non-draft horse? As you might tell, I am not that experienced with draft horses, just AHQ mostly some Arabian too. So, if you could recomend some resourses like books or websites I would be very thankful. So, Thanks!
how to deal with a lazy horse whilst riding? i was riding my horse other night in the arena nd he is very hard to get going but on a hack he is fine , ive checked for health problems nd he is fine, he only seems to listen to my leg aids on a hack but not in the arena. help please!! also ive tried the whip but hes not responding to that aswell
What limiations do a QUARTER horse and a MORGAN horse have? examples of limations: • Concerns • Problems (include health problems, conformation, how they are trained, controversy about breed) • Weaknesses • Availability • Expense • Not suitable for (things they were NOT historically bred for…) these two breeds are such good ones i have no idea. i tried googling nothing comes up. no sellers/breeders would want to advertise the 'limations' Thank you toast!
What do you do if a horse is playful/stubborn bucking? No health problems, or indication of bolting, just "No I dont wanna", or "How dare you be on my back" And if it has alrady been lunged, how would/do you handle it? Im just curious (and for my own reasons) because every bucking fit etc Ive been told is caused by health problems, and Ive never been told what to do if hes basically taking the p**s
Do you think a 10 hour trailer ride would be too much for my 28 year old horse ? We may have to relocate and I am worried it may be too much for him.I have a 10 year old that would be coming along too. He is in good shape and has no major health problems. I know it is a long trip but I cannot imagine leaving him I have had him for 21 years.
Sick Horse? help please if you have ever heard of these problems.? I as wondering if anyone at all could shed some light on a situation I had with my previous horse. At the time he was a 5 year old 16.3hh thoroughbred, he had been tried for racing but never made it to start because he was too slow. I got him when he was 5 and rode him for about 4 years. I trained him for 3 day events and about 2 years into our companionship we were having a lot of success and were up to a D grade level. As time progressed his behavior deteriorated and he began bucking and rearing often. I gave him some time off competitions, showjumping and dressage thinking it was the stress of the work taking a toll on him. I took him trail riding with other horses and he started to go completely crazy every time another horse went in front of him or if he was separated from his paddock mate. It got to the point that I took him on a trail ride with a group of other horses and he bucked, kicked, reared and ran sideways for the entire duration of the trail ride, regardless of where he was amongst the other horses. He started throwing and twisting his head to right when I was riding him and eventually he could not get onto the left canter lead, despite being able in the past to do flying changes etc. When all this started to happen I got out the vet to test him for soreness but he couldn't find anything. I got his teeth done, his bridle and saddle checked. I got out a horse chiropractor and an equine 'massagist' and no one found anything wrong with him. It got to the point where when I was riding him his eyes would roll back in his head and he would try to throw himself by his shoulder onto anything that was close to him, people, trees, fences anything. I had a horse health specialist fly down from Melbourne to conduct a thorough examination and he could not find anything wrong with him. I tried spelling the horse for a year but he was no better when I tried riding him again. Although he is only 10 now he has been retired and just lives fat and happy in a big field of grass with his paddock mate. I was just wondering has anyone else's horses ever shown these signs and what was the matter with them? Does his symptoms sound like anything that anyone else has dealt with? His gradual deterioration is really worrying, its like he simply is not there when he is throwing one of these fits. I had other trainers try to ride and they each had the same opinion that he was just too dangerous to ride. He had no care about his wellbeing and literally threw his body into things. His eyes got really bloodshot over time and they rolled back into his head when he had one of these fits. I've gotten many opinions on if it was just bad behaviour or if it was something else and it is obvious that there is something very wrong with him.
My horse is being evaluated for a therapeutic riding program. What should I expect? My horse is a 25 year old Arabian mare. Has no health problems and has been used primarily as a trail horse. She neck reins, direct reins, responds to leg cues, etc etc. I only ride her about 3 times a week now, approximately 45 minutes to an hour each time. I was just wondering what they will be looking for when they go to ride her and what not. Is there anything that would make it to where she would not qualify?
what should i feed my horse in the winter? i have a 19 year old mare. she just hacks out maybe goes in the school once a week. i need some help on what to feed her in the winter. she has no health problems and cost doesn't matter in the feed i just want the best for her.
I have my own ideas, but why is a horse lazy? This one is very healthy and fed well, no health problems that I know of.. But he is very lazy, doesn't want to stay trotting or galloping, Help? Advice? He is a young horse, was a parade horse before I started riding him, he hates any bit, so I am going to ask the lady who owns him to use a different bridle with no bit... Let him do what he wants for awhile, no spurs, that others use on him.. I don't like them.. I think he is rebelling, we'll see I guess.
Articles online for horse health? Has anyone ever found a great website(s) with articles on health related horse issues. I want to brush up on a lot of stuff i may run into here at the rescue and not yet faced, like my first experience with the colic yesterday. I have tons of books but after a severe blow to my brain believe it or not i can see better looking at the computer screen, my books will gather dust. I have glasses but that not the problem its how my brain receives information after the brain injury that screws up my vision when i read small line after line small print. Why did i just share that with you all??? LOL I know all the signs and symptoms of injuries and diseases but would love to learn any of the new treatments, medication whatever is out there, I'm all about the learning of new things. So maybe a few of you have found the perfect website packed full of information. Thanks
the "can i keep a horse in my garage" question? mm, so i asked a question about keeping a horse in my garage. i got a few answers that i don't think got my question, or maybe i didn't put enough details into it. i'm not KEEPING the horse inside the garage 24/7. i have around 2 acres i'll be fencing in, and the garage would be like temporary barn ( with a stall of course ), and the horse would be in there just for the night, be put in at around 8pm and being let out at 5/6 am. so if the horse could develop health problems, then i won't do it, but i'm just wondering if it was possible. thanks..
What do you think of my horse? I wanted you to tell me what you think of my horse. Please be honest :) Name: Struttin (barn name Strut) Height: 14.2 hh Color: Dark brown Age: 13 Breed: Welsh/Thouroughbred Cross About: Strut is a very fancy horse. He is a well known horse, he has his name on two trophy's in Kenntucky, and got 4th at Pony Finals one year(: He has had a lot of professional training, shown every where, been to at least a million shows. He doesn't really like water but will go through it, and sometimes can get a little strong in a course. Jumps 3ft, amazing trot and canter, and jump. Always wins shows. He has the cutest personality and is like a dog, loves licking your hand, following you, and gets jealous when I pet another horse. Has no health problems, and does not need shoes. He loves shows and knows when we are about to go to one. He is very loving also. Never refuses a jump and jumps anything you want him too :) Here is a album of pictures of him, and please watch the videos :) http://s996.photobucket.com/albums/af90/gymbrat27_2009/ Be honest and tell me what you think of him. Also he is not for sale, but if he was he is more then a few thousand. :))
Mansfield Park- What is Fanny's Health problem that she must ride horses? Edmund mentions if he can borrow her mare for Miss Crawford to ride. And Fanny replies she can walk well enough. What is the matter with her?

Horse health help!-skin!? Recently I have noticed a few small lumps on my horses chest. I took them as mosquito bites. (we have a lot of them in mississippi) they spread. now they are all the way up and down her kneck and shoulders. So today when i was brushing her(she is sheading) those areas with the lumps are almost hairless. Please help! What could it be?! I've never read any heath problems that included lumps.
Horse Health and Hygene questions?!?!? Ok so We have several horses....There's a 3 year old chesnut gelding that I think is having ear problems. He is shaking his head alot and was trying to scratch his ears on the fence.I just noticed it this morning when I went out to fill there water trough back up. I didn't get a chance to look inside his ear but I could see some gunk(ear wax maybe??) outside on his ear fluff. Oh and I don't clip there ears so.... my questions are What are symptoms of ear mites, ticks, lice? How can I get rid of the gunk in his ears? Also I have a Show pony. I have given him a bath several times(over a week apart). No matter how much I scrub his legs I can never get them White!!! I know that you can put baby powder on white face markings to make them look good. Could I do that to his legs? What have you done for cleaning white legs? Also if someone would explain to me how to put a picture on here I could add one.
HORSE PROBLEMS... Is it a back issue? Hello, I currently have a 7 y\o TB mare on trial and I am at a loss on what to do...When i went and tried her out the first time she was great but pinned her ears at a canter, i took her home and she is stopping out of no where, trying to bite at my feet and not going, she is supposed to be a well trained hunter\jumper. Also when i tried to get her to go using a crop (she wouldn't listen to my leg aids) she tried to buck me but then behaved for the rest of the day but still stiff head up and ears pinned...also she is supposed to have jumped to 2'9 and when i try to take her over cross rails she always does cat hops on every fence no matter what gait or momentum we are going. Please help, I have checked her back and nothing seems sore and she does it bareback with a halter so its not a tack problem. How can i tell for sure if it is her back or her behavior. I want to bring in a vet however they don't do much more than what i have done for a pre purchase exam and she isn't even mine yet so i don't want to dish out alot of money on a chiropractor or a masseuse or things like that until i know if it is fixable if it is her back, or if she is just testing me and i don't want to push her if it is a health issue as i don't want any injuries. Thanks Hello, i have indeed tried bonding with her by brushing her and such, lungeing her, doing easy work etc...also she is fine and does not pin her ears at the lunge unless she is changing gates... Owners let me have a month trial so if she had any back issues or behavioural problems she couldnt have known about it. She has been ridden the same style and i have tried different things with her.
Horse wont eat. help? My horse has been having health problems and cant eat hay, he's lost weight like crazy so i've been soaking horse chow and equine senior. He is able to eat it but after a couple bites he wont. If i put fruit in he'll eat a little more, but barely. What can i do to make it more appealing to him?
How much higher could my 14.1 hh quarter horse mare jump? well my mare is 16 years old. she does have some health problems but they don't really affect her (she has allergies and a history of lameness but she hasn't been lame in more than 3 years. the highest i've jumped on her is 3'3" (i actually jumped that today - maybe 3'4" or something idk). I just don't know how much higher I should jump with me on her back. We ride English of course and she LOVES to jump once she gets going :). So how much higher would she be able to jump?
Right heres the deal i have been offered a horse but i don't know if they are asking too much for him? The horse i have been offered is an Akhal TekeX Arab. Hes 6 years old, 15.3hh and is schooling well on the ground and is learning to jump. he has great potantial to go far adn has also got the stanama to do endurance. He has obviously been treated badly and has some sort of phycological problem. maybe once every couple of months you will go to get on him and for no reason he will start bucking and rearing. I have ahd him for a year now on loan and can deal with his problems. he has no problems health wise. The owner is wanting £3200 which is including tack(which is only a year old) and rugs I am not very good at pricing horses so any sugestions will be great! he has had his back checked and his teeth cheched and everythings fine. His owner bought him for £2700 (not inc tack) but when she saw him and road him at the yard he came from he was really quiet which is what she wanted but when she took him home she found out he was infested with worms. When she got him cleared of worm he came back to life and acted his normal self which isn't so quiet
Has anyone ever had a horse lock up on his front legs? I am looking at a 11 year old Arab and when you put a saddle on him, he locks up in the front legs. He will not or can not move. You can ride him bareback and all is well. After you get him to move he is fine it's just at first with the saddle this happens.Vet checked and he is fine no health problems.
Please help! I need to know how to approach my boarding facility about feeding my horse more...? They are great people and really care about the horses. I prefer my horse to have more weight than he does and I don't want to offend them. I have mentioned a few times that I think he is too thin. He has good teeth and no known health problems. I have offered to buy feed and supplements. He is pastured boarded with others. I don't want to make things uncomfortable but I am starting to get worrried. I just would like some suggestions on how to approach the situation in a way that will be the most effective without being rude. There are very few facilities in the area and this is the best one, I would rather stay there. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks! Thank you everyone for your suggestions. He does get bullied off his food and he does get grain but obviously is not able to eat it. So unless they agree to stand there and fend off the other horses... I am not able to go out and give the food myself or I would. I will try to approach the situation again and be more firm. I will offer more money too and buy my own supplements etc. Thanks! No grass. Just hay and feed once a day.
Horse-buying problems... my parents dont support me :(? I found a horse that needs rescued, he is an 8 year old arabian. He is finally in pretty good health but just need someone that will work with him consistently and find him a new home. I have a had horses all my life and understand the care and expenses of having a horse. I am a freshman in college so everthing i buy comes out of pocket and I will be in dept when i graduate. My parents are not supoortive of my getting this horse. I dont blame them but getting this horse is something i need to do. No one else is going to take care of this horse. I found a barn that is only $140 a month and gave them paperwork for the stall (starting in May). I just have to buy hay and food. In all i calculated it will be abouit $320 to take care of this horse, this includes board, food, gas, vet checks, farrier, worming. I have friends that are going to donate a couple months of board and i got about 30 bales of hay donated. The horse will cost $200 to buy and i have $600 in cash to pay for the first month and a vet check. I am very prepared and have a job set up that will give me enoigh hours to help this horse and afford books for next semester. I amgoing to sell him by Sept and if there are no buyers i am just going to give him to a nice family. I dont really WANT a horse to have a horse. I am in college and understand the costs. I just want to give this horse a good home. But it starts with me. I obviously have looked a lot into this and have taken up the resposibility of looking into costs and finding a way to make it work. But my parents dont support me AT ALL. Its purely a financial thing, I dont blame them but i NEED to do this. I cant live with myself knowing this horse will end up somewhere very bad like it is now. How can i help my parents understand? And what do i do even though they dont support me?

Barn Sour Horse????? One of my horses is very barn sour, he will not leave "his" area...Here are some methods I have been thinking of does it sound like it may work... If he refuses to walk walk up and down the street if that fails make him run around in circles and if THAT fails have my hubby hold out a carrot and every step he takes he gets a bite.. Which one sounds the best He is very food motivated...He has no problems or health problems just a stubborn horse!
