horse health question - should I worry about a nosebleed on my old gelding? I have a 19 year old paint gelding who has had occasional nose bleeds for about 10 years now. They usually last a day or so and are not usually excercise induced. He is a kids horse and is not ridden much. He has had a bleed for over a week now, just a drip but looks bad on his white nose. Should I be worried?

Horse Health and Hygene questions?!?!? Ok so We have several horses....There's a 3 year old chesnut gelding that I think is having ear problems. He is shaking his head alot and was trying to scratch his ears on the fence.I just noticed it this morning when I went out to fill there water trough back up. I didn't get a chance to look inside his ear but I could see some gunk(ear wax maybe??) outside on his ear fluff. Oh and I don't clip there ears so.... my questions are What are symptoms of ear mites, ticks, lice? How can I get rid of the gunk in his ears? Also I have a Show pony. I have given him a bath several times(over a week apart). No matter how much I scrub his legs I can never get them White!!! I know that you can put baby powder on white face markings to make them look good. Could I do that to his legs? What have you done for cleaning white legs? Also if someone would explain to me how to put a picture on here I could add one.
Horse health question? My horse loses his balance, his back legs aren't working correctly and his front feet seem sore, He took some pain medication and is walking a little better but, What is wrong with him? and how do you fix this? My horse loses his balance, his back legs aren't working correctly and his front feet seem sore, He took some pain medication and is walking a little better but, What is wrong with him? and how do you fix this? also our vet suggested that it could be west nile but he is not a horse vet, and i wanted a second opinion on that.
Horse Health Question? I just bought a horse last week at a horse auction. As soon as we got home she had this dry cough and greenish-yellow goo in her eyes. A couple days later her nose was running with the same greenish-yellow stuff. She seems like she has NO energy, but since I just got her I don't know if that is her normal self or not. I did contact her owners and they said she left their house in perfect condition but they were selling her because they have too many horses. I have not contacted the vet yet as I'm hoping this clears up. I don't want any responses about "how bad it is to buy a horse at a sale or that buying a horse at a sale carries risks such as this". I'm just curious if anyone else has been in this situation and what the prognosis was. Please help! She has been seperate from the other horses since she's got here. Thanks so much for all the great advice!
Horse health question, anyone? Yeah, it's awkward to ask, but my sister's horse is looking a little swollen in his "Manhood regions".... Any thoughts on why this might be? We're gonna ask our riding teacher soon, so we'll find out soon enough, but it's always nice to have second opinions. :) We're thinking he might just need to be cleaned or somethin'. P.S. He's a gelding. Thank-you, Cassie, that's what I thought might be the problem too. We're going to get that done quite shortly, whether that's the problem or not. :)
How much would it cost? Horse Health Question!? How much would it cost to get all four legs x-rayed for a horse? I live in Western, NC if that helps. My horse has had off and on lameness for over a year and nothing seems to be helping, we have to investigate further. I'm planning on finding the cheapest place to do it, and then taking the x-rays to someone more experienced to evaluate them(I'm not financially ready for this, but I don't want my horse to be retired at 18). Do you think that's a good idea? Thanks!
horse health question? this maybe a little gross, but my arabs butt hole is like dandruffy looking or peeling i gues and i was wondering if that would be a sign of tail rubbbing or is there anything that i can do. because it does not look normal....lol
Horse Health Question- PLEASE HELP!!!? My mare (starting about a year ago) has been giving out in her back end. Nothing dramatic just a little dip then she catches herself. So we have had chiropractic work on her and that helped for a while then she goes back to doing it again. She also limps on and off. When you ride her she does it and sometimes when you aren't. I have started her in jumping figure 8 and she for the most part can't even make the 8 inch jump! I think that it has too do with her pelvis but do you know of anything that it could be. Oh yeah I forgot to mention that she is on pasture rest and is NOT being ridden currently. She was fine after the chiro. appt. and just started it again about a week ago. Plus she really isn't old (10). I would also like to know who/what kind of apt. to make. (another chiro, vet, ect.)
Horse ownership questions regarding feed/supplements and common health issues...? So I am probably going to get a horse within the next couple years. I have the time and experience and I am working on the money part. I have been riding/jumping/training/leasing horses for 6 years and all of my trainers think I am very ready to own a horse. I know how to ride and train a horse etc... The only thing that I am worried about is feed/supplements and health issues. I know the basic grass hay v.s. alfalfa. I am not so good when it comes to supplements because all of my lease horses never had to have them. I know about collic and basic hoof and coat infections such as dry/cracked hoofs, bow tendon, abcess, rain rot etc... Before owning I want to know everything just in case an important situation. But it seems like horse owners don't study all of the health stuff before owning. It seems like they learn it along the way...? Can you please list and describe common feed/supplements(amounts of each) and common health issues so that I can start learning? Thanks!!!:)
What do you guys look at when buying a horse and other questions? I may be getting my own horse soon and I want to know what to look at when I am looking at a certain horse. Things like age and such. Do I want to look at its health record when choosing? Also should I try asking the seller if I can ride it first before I buy it? Also what questions would be key to ask the seller? Thanks!
Horse question: What are the health risks of a bunch of dead fish laying around in the horse pasture until we? can get them picked up!? I know, it sounds crazy but our creek flooded BIG time and now there are about 100 dead fish laying in the lower pasture! Im hoping over night last night that all the possums, foxes and raccoons had a fish eating party!!! But my sister is freaking out thinking our horses are going to die if they eat grass next to where the fish are! I know they can get deathly ill if they get botulism or if they eat moldy hay..I just dont think with about 120plus acres they are going to chose to stand around dead fish and eat grass!
A couple of horse questions? okay i have a couple questions :) 1) how can i get my ponys tail and but white :) ahaha he is like permentaly stained yellow. do any of you have tricks to get it out. hes been bathed like 10 times and it wont come out and it looks so stupid at shows:/ ( hah hes 20 years old and has a heart of gold :) he still shows and gets ridden and jumps 2'6 at shows :) and hes stilll in perfect health!) hah sorry just had to add that :) 2) how do i desensitize my horse to tarps and bridges? 3) my and my pony have a really good bond :) we love each other, but what can i do to play with him/ grow our bond even more? it can be on horseback or on the ground. 4) my pony was abused when he was young, and he doesnt liek water he would stand still for a bath and would bolt away but now he stand perfectly still, my barn is going swimmign soon with the horses and i want to bring him. do you think he will swim?
Horse health after colic surgery - please read.? I have a horse that had colic surgery two years ago. Two surgeries, actually. He ended up with a lot of scar tissue in his gut that caused a lot of colics in the 6 months after his surgeries. We changed feed and management, and he had over a year almost colic-free. (He had two minor colics that did not require a vet's attention). Now he has had two *very* serious colics in 3 weeks - both were twists. Here is my question: has anyone had an experience with a horse who has previously had colic surgery where there were serious complications much later, and after a period of health? Is this just bad luck or is his health deteriorating? Any experience anyone wants to share would be greatly appreciated. I am starting to wonder if he should be euthanized. I love this horse to pieces and I have a lot invested in him, emotionally and monetarily, but I don't want him to suffer needlessly. My vet will certainly be involved in the decision, and has been, but the ultimate decision is mine. I don't know anyone personally who has been in this situation and neither does he, so I am trying to gather information.
I have 2 horse questions...? first: what does C.O.P.D. stand for? i believe it is a health problem. on my sister's county fair emergency stall card, her lease horse's owner wrote C.O.P.D. under "any known health problems." second: how do i go about strengthening and building the muscles in my horse's neck? he's getting nice and fat and shiny from the beet pulp we're feeding him, but his neck is still super skinny! my trainer said lots of collection work, but is there anything else i can do? thanks!

One tip about the horse or horse health/management? Thought this would be just a little bit of fun for us horsy people :) If everybody who reads this question puts ONE interesting tip/fact that they know about horses, their health and ownership, or even riding (basically anything at all!), we can all come back and look at the answers everybody else has put. Then, everybody will learn something they didn't know before ^^ Try not to put the same answer as anybody else, but of course it can't be helped if you answer at the same time :p I know this should come under Polls and Surveys but in that section we wouldn't get the people with the right interests! Enjoy! :D
health insurance questions? After my near death experience of almost being crushed by a horse yesterday I have decided to get some health insurance . Since I do not have a job at this time I have to buy it out right from a company but I am cluless. HMO or PPO, Blue cross blue sheild, Aetna.. I have no idea. I need advice. What is the best and what should I stay away from? I know it is going to be expensive, but I gotta have it and most jobs in this area don't even provide health isurance anyways. Got a lot of 89's and 39's around here. 89 days and 39 hours:( The isurance is just for me since hubby's parents insure him and he smokes so I am sure his would be high.
Questions to ask before we lease this horse? sooo im really excited!!! my dad decided to ask his manager who also owns a horse farm if he personally knew any good-for beginner horses. he said he had a 14 hand pony who he had bought for his 5 and 7 year old grandchildren and they really didnt ride him that much when they visited so he said if we would like to keep him for a few months to a year at our barn we could! he would pay for hay, grain, and emergencies that werent our fault. all i really have to pay is farrier. hes worked for many many years and we trust him and everything but what questions about the horse should i ask? i am going to go to work with my dad on wednesday so i will see him then. so far i have? does he need shoes or just a trimming? has he ever had any previous health problems? its also over an hour away, but hes going to trailer it. so, i dont think i could have the same farrier and vet, but my neighbors have recommended some good ones :)
Random health info questions...? So I've seen it everywhere, but it's never been explained. What exactly is HYPP? I think it's something genetic, but I don't get it. And what are nettles? I asked my instructor about some bumps on my horse's legs today and she said that they were nettles. She said that they're, like, just itchy bumps horses can get in the summer. She told me to rinse her legs and pick them off. Are they dangerous or contagious? Or are they just a condition that appears ocassionaly? Experienced horsepeople only. Please and Thanks!
Questions to ask about horse I'm buying.? I just recently moved and my trainer in GA found me a horse down there. He's getting vetted on moday. I've never riden him before because I couldn't make it down there to look at him (I just saw a vid. online) but my trainer trained him so she knows just what he's like and I totally trust her. Now assuming he passes the vet check and I'm getting him I have lots of questions about him here's my list... What type of feed is he on now? What type of turnout is he used to? Where does he normally stand in his pasture group (dominate or not)? Does he get rainrot or thrush easily? What is his blanket size? How often is he shod? When is he due to be shod? What kind of wormer is he on? I also will ask for health records and stuff to know when he needs to get his immunizations and such. I know about how he rides and everything I just need to know about his upkeep and stuff. Can you come up with anymore questions? Thanks!
Horse Vet Check -- what are some of the things that should be checked before buying a horse? Does anyone have advice regarding the health check of a horse before purchase? What are some of the important things that should be checked? Also, have you run into problems with the purchase of a horse that you wish you would have known about before the purchase? I am considering the purchase of a horse and would appreciate any experience you could share so that I (and others) can avoid making the same mistakes. An additional question: Should I be concerned if the horse likes to grind its teeth while working on the bit? This seems like just a bad habit as the teeth have been regularly floated, but I just worry that there might be health and/or performance problems as a result of this habit. Anyone have any experience with this problem? Thanks so much for your help !!!

6 questions for fun.. if you're bored? horse lovers what about you? questions for fun...? 1. what's the (show name, registered name and and what you call them) name/sex/breed/age/how many hands of your horse or the horse that you ride? 2. what's does your horse look like (pic) 3. how long have you been riding? what do you ride (english, western; hunter, jumper, dressage, barrells, parrelli) 4. what got you into horses? and why do you love them? 5. what's your favorite horse website (can be a game, place to buy horse stuff, chat, facts about horses anything!) 6. any facts you find interesting? my answers: 1. my pony is a 15 year old qh mare at 14.1 hh. her show name is Tickle my Fancy, her registered name is PeppyDell Snickers, and her regular name is Snickers. 2. this is all her: http://www.flickr.com/photos/39821419@N06/page2/ and you can look at the other two pages (that's me in all the pics with her) and the others are of my dogs... 3. i've been riding for 9 years. i ride english hunter. 4. when I was little, I had medical/health issues and i did therapeutic horse riding. I quit after a few years (well the barn shut down…) and so a few years later.. when I was like 9 I went to a horse camp and fell in love with horses. It was really for the people at the school (like competition in which I didn’t wanna do) so I switched farms and was at a farm for five years until I started getting competitive (that was when I was 14… when I switched the third time). I love horses because they are my life. Without them, I don’t know what I would do! They make me happy and teach me so much! They also help me get stronger (physically and mentally) speaking that I have physical problems but I am a really good rider… i work my way through it… horses are every part of my life as are my best friends (they actually love horses just as much as I do!) and horses are my best friends too for I can trust them not to tell a secret or anything!!! 5. idk what my favorite website is. It used to be howrse/horseland/horseisle but then I grew out of that. I was hoping I could try some of you guys websites! 6. - did you know the oldest horse ever lived was named old billy lived for 62 human years!!! - did u know that horses can’t throw up? And they only sleep for 2-3 ½ hours a day!
Sorry about this question, but health is full of teenagers and I usually ask questions here for my infant... ? and I feel comfortable asking you lovely people for your opinion. What could be the cause for my chronic muscle pain in my back and legs? My back has hurt me for a long time, but lately is seems to be spreading to a lot of other parts of my body. My upper legs, calves and ankles are killing me! I've had an mri done and showed nothing, so the doctor thinks its my muscles. I was prescribed a muscle relaxer, however, it offers no relief. I'm always stiff and in pain. I feel like my body is in a chronic charlie horse, especially my upper thighs which feel like they could snap in half. Any idea what it is and any relief suggestions? I'm 34 so growing pains are out. I'm not overweight and mri did show minor disc degeneration
Is 23 too old to jump a horse? So, I have a grade horse who is 23 and lately I have been thinking about trying to jump him. Nothing competitively or anything, just occasionally. I think it would be fun to try it. He is in great health, considering his age of course, no health problems, joints move easy. So, my question is would 23 be too old to jump a horse. It would never be too high or too hard, maybe a foot high. Also, he's not entirely new to jumping. When loping through the desert, he will occasionally jump over small bushes or such. I know it isn't like jumping over actual jumps, but at least he has jumped something.
A serious question about my horses health. [Strangles]? I have an ex-eventer thoroughbred. Hes 24 years old and the sweetest guy ever. I havnt had him long, and truth be told I didnt really want him. But he wouldve died at his last stable. His owners never took him out or worked him. When I got him he was FULL of lice, worms, and beyond skinny. Just the other day we found out he also has strangles. [hes been kept in quarintine since we got him, its the barns policy] I gave him a flea bath and he looks alot better so far. His skin is still patchy but hes getting his colour back. So ive been going every day to put beditine [spelling?] on his neck, to help cure the strangles. Its only been a couple days. And its already looking alot better. Hes even got his energy back. And hes eating hay again. Does this mean hes overcoming the strangles? Any advice, or help would be great. Thanks
New Arabian horse question? Okay so at the barn where I work there are these two rescue horses they are pure-bred Arabian mares. They came from an neglect case involving 35 Arabians. They were in bad shape when they got to our barn both had sever rain rot, hoofs had not been trimmed for quite some time, and 150lbs underweight. She has come a long way in 6 months and all her health condition are cleared up. She is at a very healthy weight, hoof are in excellent shape the barn farrier says she doesn't need she and she probably will never. So I have fallen in love with one of the mares in the barn she is a 15hh Grey flea bitten Arabian (flea-bitten is a color description). She is 10yrs old and 15hh. She is the sweetest horse I have ever meet. She has never been trained to ride as she was one of 20 brood mares in the case. She does spook as of lack of handling for 10yrs, but she is a very smart horse and she has a big heart she. I am 15 and have been riding for 7 years, I have leased a young 7yr old TB, but never owned a horse. I am considered an intermediate rider (only because I don't compete in any sports eg jumping, dressage, hunting, barrel racing) But I an a big trail and beach rider. She is up for adoption and they need to find homes for 22 at the moment (is going to take a while) I have fallen in love with her, and she trusts me she Winny when I walk in the barn and follows me around the pasture, and she NEVER spooks around me (its almost like she trusts me to protect her) My barn owner says that she never acts that way around anyone but me. I do have a relative that lives 6hr away and she has broken several horses to ride and she has trained them well and I can arrange to stay with her for a month with mariah and she will train her. So I have a few questions I want a SECOND opinion on: - I am 5'10 155lbs she is 900lbs and 15hh, am I too big to ride her? - Should I adopt her or would it be best for me to have her go to another home?
My horse is seeing a chiropractor this week- questions to ask and general opinions? A horse chiropractor (who is also a vet) is coming to see my 8 year old, QH gelding this week, I show in the hunter/jumpers. My horse doesn't have any back problems as I can tell, but some stiffness in his neck. I am having the chiro come out to look him over- even though he has no obvious problems- but I have been told that performance horses should be worked on a few times a year due to their high level of activity. Other then asking about his general health and stiffness in the neck that I see- is there anything else that I should ask him or look for during the visit? Any general opinions on the subject of horse chiropractors? Thanks for your opinions!
Are there any thoroughbred trainers or owners who would be willing to answer some questions? I am an elementary school student doing research on Thoroughbreds. I need to know. First, do Thoroughbreds require any special tack, training or treatment that normal non-racing horses don't need? Second, what are thoroughbred health problems that are caused by racing or are more dangerous for thoroughbreds than other horses? Third, if I was to buy a thoroughbred and race that horse, what important things would I need to know? Last, what sets thoroughbreds apart from other horses?
Great Dane owners- some questions about Dane health? I have been considering a Great Dane as our next dog (a few years down the road, yet), because I believe they fit well with our lifestyle (not very high energy, simple grooming, good with other dogs and small animals, trainable, and large enough to not be high-risk around horses). If I have any misconceptions about those things though, please correct me. I'm not at all intimidated by their size (I have horses and honestly, when people tell me my 90-lb GSD is huge I don't understand what the fuss is about), and have read up on appropriate protein and fat levels for puppies. It doesn't seem like they actually eat as much as people think, either. I have also read that living space isn't really an issue because they are "couch potatoes," but I did want to throw it out there that by the time we got the Dane, we would be living on a farm with acreage (not that it would be an outside-only dog, by any means). I wanted some more information about raising them and their breed-specific health issues, such as: 1) Should spay/neuter be delayed because of their growth pattern and large size, and if so, how long? Does this differ any between males and females? 2) How advisable is a gastropexy to prevent bloat? Approximately how much does this procedure cost? How early should this be done (and if it is relatively early, is it better then to move up the spay or hold off on the pexy)? 3) Are there any health tests that can be done in the parents to determine their status as far as Wobbler's goes? What tests should be done besides OFA and CERF testing? 4) I have read that keeping their exercise to a low level as a puppy is advisable. Can anyone clarify what a "low" or appropriate amount of exercise would be, and until what age is this advisable? 5) What size/dimensions for a crate is appropriate? We bought the largest one our local pet stores sell for our GSD, and I know there is no way that thing would be comfortable for an adult Dane.
"Crackling" of horse's inside hooves?!?! And other hoof questions....? You guys will probably have noticed me complaining that I don't think Exie's owner is picking out his hooves when I'm not there (every other day at the moment) and that they get caked up with hardened mud. Today I did a really thorough inspection of his hooves, washing them thoroughly when I was giving him a bath, and inside they looked like this: http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0745.jpg http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0747.jpg Could this be a result of the lacking hoof picking or is it normal? The crackling was clearly part of the hoof, and did neither go away with picking or hosing. A couple of weeks ago his inside hoof quality was PRISTINE, with good, hard "white" bone all over. I know I sound like a NOOB here, but I find it better to be asking than possibly ignoring a serious problem.... Would anyone else agree that he has poor hoof quality? A self-proclaimed farrier on here earlier mentioned an "event line" - which I've noticed and been trying to take care of all winter, but I don't understand what the event line MEANS and WHY it's appeared in the first place? He has two kinds of these, one horizontal on each front hoof, and a vertical one on his rear left. Here are pictures: Horizontal: http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0748.jpg Vertical: http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0750.jpg There are more pictures of those specifically in the album so you can browse. Someone on here mentioned that he had extremely straight hooves last time I linked to pictures. I cannot for the very life of me believe this when I took new pictures. True or false? http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0754.jpg That can't be true, can it? He isn't pointing his toes the slightest bit out, is he? He doesn't paddle when he's trotting at all or anything. http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0751.jpg I know the answer is pretty much going to be no, just wondering how you guys feel =) --In the pictures he's got Windsor Green Hoof Grease on his hooves. Sorry about that - I should have taken pictures before I oiled them up but I've really been trying to take care of his hooves and have been using a lot of hoof grease lately! How do you feel about the apparent sloping of the hoof that can be seen here http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0750.jpg and here? http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x314/gilraen690/Hooves/?action=view¤t=IMG_0757.jpg It appears to me that the farrier has taken a shortcut and "shaped" his hooves to the shoes - earlier on you could really see the white at the toe. But I asked a question about this earlier and couldn't really get a conclusive answer. The reason I keep asking all these silly questions about Exie is I'm wondering about buying him in a few years' time when I'm out of uni and have the time and money! Now I have plenty of time to figure out everything about his health ;)
I have some questions about thrush? i do not have a horse that has thrush but...i wanna know how you can tell when a horse is developing thrush and how to treat it the early and late stages...and any other horse health facts would be nice too thanks... ~amanda
Senior horse question? What is the oldest horse you have ever known of that is still being ridden? I ask because I have a 17 and 18 year old. They are both still in great shape and no health issues just curious as to what is the oldest you know of? Thanks
What do think of me as a horse trainer? What is your training method? Does anyone need help? Look here!? Hey everyone, I guess this can be sort of a forum. I just want everyone to explain their way with horses and comment on others' ways and my way. I would also like to see opinions on natural horse remedies (e.g. chaste berry oil). You can comment on other people's answers by editing yours, but please write EDIT: exactly like that. This is also to help people with horse training questions and for people with training problems. Please don't talk about health problems except if you are talking about natural remedies. Here's my way: "Do not conquer a horse's soul, work with it". I do something called dancing with horses. Me and the horses think and move as one and really show "oneness". I train completely naturally but I also work with bits. I also use whips- I never hurt the horse with it, I only use it as an extension of my arm to help convey body language. You must reveal yourself to the horse if you want the horse to reveal itself to you. Once both horse and rider have revealed together they have stepped onto the same path of trust and understanding each other as equals. You must live in the moment, think with the horse, be completely open, have no lies, trust, be calm, be balanced, and be be strong. Horses are creatures of dignity and once you have taken it away you have killed the soul of that horse. That is what I base my training off of. Horse training is communication through mental and physical openness, understanding, and equality. I have just starting researching into natural remedies that I will use when training horses or working with them. I will also have some on hand like clove oil which numbs a horse. I know how to make them but I plan on buying essential oils. Believe it or not you can get pretty much any essential oils or seeds from amazon.com! I also have a local drug store that sells many. Here are some, they aren't very accurate but say the main use: Chasteberry oil: Balances hormones-helps with mares in heat Clove oil: applied outside the body(only small amounts in mouth) and numb the horse Basil Leaf : helps with digestion and killing internal worms as well as being a mild sedative and insect repellent. Lavender: calming Those are just a few, I can add more if people are interested. You can ask me any questions at: nature2horses@hotmail.com I'd be happy to help anyone with questions about training horses or developing a relationship with a horse. as an equal, i didn't mean I wasn't the dominant one but that I treated the horse with respect. I am not against training aids but they should not be used to hurt a horse.
How old is "old" for a horse? I know that horses live up to 20-35 years, and i know that it all depends of the health, but what is the average age a horse should slow down, the reason to my question is i am going to be leasing a 16 year old gelding, and the owner said (before i knew his age) that he was "older" i never thought 16 was old, but now I am am second guessing myself -thank you!!!
Questions about horses? I know very little about horses, so I'm kind of wondering if you all could give me some education about them. I'm not planning on owning them anytime soon or anything but I had a few basic questions. The more you can answer, the better. Oh, and links are great, but any personal experience is even better! 1. Where should you buy a good quality companion horse? 2. Basic needs such as shelter, space requirements, equipment? 3. Which to buy: a foal, unbroken adult, or an older horse previously owned and already broken? 4. Best breed for beginners? 5. Health issues and medical info? Those are just some basic questions I have, but any help is greatly appreciated. Okay, thanks!
Need more info on a horse? Well I just asked a question a little while ago because I was concerned with my horses health and that I thought he was sick so when I talked to my uncle about I didn't think to ask him about a medical report so he told me to read his report before we spend a whole bunch of money on a vet, and there's nothing there that claims he has any tumors or that he is sickly so he's probably just adjusting to his new home, I just got him yesterday but I'm so excited about having a horse I won't stay out of his face lol. Well since I don't really know anything about horses, is it okay for me to leave him in his stable unless I am riding him, and yesterday I fed him an apple and then earlier today I fed him a carrot and he's been eating grass for the most part. But if I'm going to be away for most of the time, should I leave him in his stable? And I've noticed he's chewing on his wood too is that normal?
Question for horse owners..? I don't a horse but I plan on adopting one in a few weeks. I overheard an argument at my stable about the "right" bedding to use in horse stalls. That got me wondering other peoples opinions about which bedding or ground-cover they use. Which one do you think is the best and which one the worst and why. Are some hazardous to a horse's health? Thank you for the answers
Women backing Palin - are we thinking this through? Palin is for sending more young people (your kids!) to war. Obama is for ending the war, securing the country, channeling $$ wasted in excessive military spending to take care of TAXPAYERS' needs! Palin is for "trickling of wealth" model: government takes care of the rich and lets poor take care of themselves. Under this model mothers pay through the nose for medical help and are at high risk of ending up with a debt they CAN'T HANDLE. Obama will make medical help accessible for women and children. Palin is for giving birth and going to work the next day and believes every woman should do the same. Obama for letting parents take care of their sick child AND keep their job and wage. He is for giving women sufficient time to recover. Not all of us have Palin's horse-like health. QUESTION: are women thinking this through? Obama's program defends our best interest. Palin's views are anti-feminist and ultra-conservative. Obviously women can identify with a woman, but do you think we should vote on this criteria alone and not on what's best for us? TheBanshee, Ken and others who believe that "we have to win this war" - Why? Why do we have to win this war? Have we started it for the right reasons? No. Do we have any right to invade another country just because some group of outlaws with little or no ties to it caused us 9/11 grief? NO. Just last week Palin said while visiting Ground Zero: "We are killing people in Iraq, so they don't come here and kill us". Does that make ANY sense to you? Palin sent her own son to Iraq, because she believes in WAR. She's not lying. And THAT is scary. She MEANS war. She thinks it's a good way to address a problem, especially with people in other countries, whom she never met and is instinctively afraid of.
Shod to barefoot questions? I recently changed farriers because I felt the quality of my old farrier was going down hill. While getting my horses shod and trimmed, my new farrier asked why one was wearing shoes, I said because my last farrier told me he would benefit from them and I let him shoe the horse. He told me the hooves were in very good condition, that there wasn't any real reason to have the horse shod and to consider letting the horse go barefoot. So, I'm considering it. The horse in question is a gelding(I don't think that matters), he's a grade QHx. 8-10 years old, 1000-1200 pounds. He's never gone lame, foundered, and doesn't have any health issues. He's worn shoes for the last 11 months. His hooves need to be moisturized(I use rain maker) because they get a little dry in the summer, other then that he's fine. He's only a pleasure horse for joy riding, no showing, intense work, etc. -I've been reading that horses tend to go lame once shoes are pulled..why? -Is there any adverse affect of being shod, then going barefoot? I have horses who do go barefoot, they don't have a problem I don't think they've ever worn shoes, though. -What else should I know? Please&Thankyou.
the "can i keep a horse in my garage" question? mm, so i asked a question about keeping a horse in my garage. i got a few answers that i don't think got my question, or maybe i didn't put enough details into it. i'm not KEEPING the horse inside the garage 24/7. i have around 2 acres i'll be fencing in, and the garage would be like temporary barn ( with a stall of course ), and the horse would be in there just for the night, be put in at around 8pm and being let out at 5/6 am. so if the horse could develop health problems, then i won't do it, but i'm just wondering if it was possible. thanks..

The Akhal Teke and horse conformation in general....? I've stumbled across a few Akhal Teke horses on Flickr recently, and it just got me wondering... In the horse world, there is so much emphasis on trying to achieve 'perfect' conformation in the modern horse, not only for the sake of comfort for the rider, but also for the health of the horse itself. The Akhal Teke is truly a unique breed and yet it seems to have so many undesireable traits to its conformation, yet it has superb endurance. http://www.flickr.com/photos/kerri-jo/2845414944/ What do you think about this guy? Camel or horse? Or do you love the Akhal Teke? What are your views on conformation in the breed? If this breed seems to be quite accepted, then do you think that there is too much focus on trying to own a horse which has perfect conformation? I often see questions on here from people asking to critique their horse's conformation and alot of the time the answers they recieve are quite negative (of course they are given honestly though). But the horse still performs ok as a riding horse. What are your views on this? Just curious... No thumbs down in this question please. This is more of an opinion question so I request no thumbing down.
HORSE Advice ASAP!!!!!!!!!? HELP!!!! I have a 18 year american quater horse. My question is can I breed her. She is in perfect health. Plaese no rude comments because I really do not know!

horse literature and options for a horse career? Me: I LOVE horses, always have, always will. I haven't had the chance to ride as much as I'd like to. But for the past year I've been riding twice a week and doing great, before that I tried riding at a horrible place and before that I rode during the summer at camps and worked at the stables for free lessons. I currently live abroad and my instructor speaks barely any english but she's great otherwise and is teaching me basic dressage and jumping. I'd probably consider myself an intermediate rider. I have experience riding lots of different horses and currently ride several in my lessons. From a stubborn, too smart for his own good stallion, a 5 year old arabian goof ball, and an amazing but extremely nervous dressage horse. First off: What books/dvds do you recomend to give me more theorey on english riding/showing, horse care/health, how horses think, horse training, and other horse careers. And is a horse related career an option for me? as a riding instructor or horse trainer or something. I've thought a lot about becoming a vet whitch I will persue if this 2 week summer vet information camp proves it's a profession for me(I can't apply till I'm 15) I'm really good in science classes and am currently top of my class in an IB program school and have recieved the principles award for 3 cosecutive years (aka I've got the grades to become a vet) Right but I also LOVE working with young kids. I also have worked with quite a few young horses whitch I LOVE. I know what it's like to be a riding instructor as I've recieved lessons from many and have watched lessons. I've also watched people train young horses and think that would be amazing. I have a later start on riding than most and have never shown but could I still make a living as a trainer/riding instructor? Thanks! And Sorry my question is so long, I just had too much to say!
Horses and respiratory health...? I am asking this question because my horse is having some respiratory issues. As some of you may already know my 13 y/o qh was born and raised in FL. we recently (late fall last year) moved to IN where the seasons change. It is now spring (duh!) and he has developed allergies and mild respiratory issues. here are some symptoms: head tossing (got the equilibrium nose net and he no longer does it) runny eyes (even with fly mask) ITCHING (eyes and nose) clear nasal discharge He is currently on ANIHIST (antihistamine and expectorant) and wears the nose net while under tack and a fly mask with ears while out (he is out a minimum of 18 hours a day. well ventilated barn with 2 fans in his stall, and a large window. i also water down his hay. do not soak it but i do sprinkle it with water...i do this with all my horses) The anihist came at the same time as the nose net and he has improved 100% under saddle (well as far as head shaking is concerned) and overall his eyes began to run less and instead of every day nasal discharge i only noticed it every few days or randomly. but still he is not 100%. So while he was not 100% he was improving so i "backed off" on figuring out what else to do...he seemed to be fine. just the past few days or so i have noticed (VERRRRRRRRRY MILD) breathing changes. while walking him to the pasture it is almost lke he wants to sneeze. it is quiet and unless you really listen it is not noticeable. of course i began to worry. i rode him the same day and he let out a pretty decent (dry) cough. i also heard his breathing again. he didnt seem to get "winded" or wore out but something is going on. now before you freak out, i have an appt (next friday) with a vet about and hour norht of me. i am not happy with my local (.7 mile away) vet for these kind of "serious" vet appointments. he is the shot/emergency guy. if my horses have serious lame ness or anything they get trailered an hour away. anyway. ANY help/advice/stories/experience/supplements/etc. would be great. i have read a little on heaves and am a little freaked out. he was 100% fine in florida, mind you. it is probably just seasonal allergies with a mild respiratory thing going on but i am not sure. GP-i am hoping and thinking that it is just seasonal allergies. or mshould i say i WAS thinking that. but once i noticed this very mild chanhe in his breathing i am freaked out. plus i though the discharge (clear) could be just allergies....now i am reading it could also be more severe....heaves etc.
Questions about my new ponies...? so i just adopted two ponies (well, ones a horse) who were very underfed and not ridden regularly for a long time. I just had some questions about their health... so right now, if you look at their butts theirs a line that's kind of like an upside-down U that goes just slightly over their tails... my mom thinks that it may be muscle definition (they used to both be used a LOT, like show ponies) but i'm not sure... i'll post a pic in more details... also, i checked their gums, and the younger one had regular pink ones, but the other was pretty white. So i'm getting a salt block to help them drink more water... are there any other ways to get them to drink more? also, they are really skinny, so does anyone have any strategies for gaining weight safely? (right now we have them on the grass for shorter periods of time then other ponies, and have hay, just so they don't founder. They weren't on any grain before, so we don't really want to start them on that right away) oh and the vet is coming soon to do a check up on them to make sure no one is sick or anything any advice for them would help! Thanks :3 this is the pic of their butts... you can see it on the chestnut http://s905.photobucket.com/albums/ac253/Twistycone111/ponies/?action=view¤t=newponiessss023.jpg
Horse breeding question? i traded for a few shetland pony mares... one is actually pretty small..alot like a miniature.. my neighbor has bought a aqha stallion and cant seem to keep it in pasture.. this has been a problem for several weeks now.. if this quarter horse stallion were to breed the shetland mares would that pose any health or foaling issue for the ponies.. i bought them more for pets than actual use.. i enjoy seeing them play and run.. i have to admit that pony foals would be a welcome but i do not want any health issues for the ponies.. experience info appreciated
