Horse Care Information Knowledge Base
A good book to prepare you for horse care? Know any good books about horse care? I think I may adopt my first horse in a couple of months. I've never owned my own horse- just leased. I'm interested in books with a lot of good information and advice! -Please note, i do not need you to explain basic horse care to me. I already know basic horse care. I'm more interested in finding a book that will help me understand advanced horse care- like arthritis and aging ect.
what are some good horse information sights? i am in hippology and i want to do REALLY good this year. i want some sights with info about any or all of the topics below: hoof care teeth care bits driving (harness and beginer stuff) horse diesese feed vet/farrier stuff health info any other little tidbits of information that could help me. thanks!
How much care is really required to own a horse? I've seen tons of people exaggerate the amount of time and care you need to own a horse. I know plenty of people who own pasture horses that require little maintenance. I am looking into buying a horse and I need realistic answers. One horse. It will be a pleasure horse that will be ridden probably every other day and live in a pasture. And additional information you can provide me with about caring for a horse is welcome :)
How much does it cost to purchase and care for a horse? I have always wanted a horse. I love riding them when I can. Right now I don't have the means to get one, but I'd like to save some money so someday down the road I can make this a reality for myself. How much does an average horse cost, and how much does it usually cost to take care of them? I won't get one until I have some land and a place to keep it, in case that makes a difference in how much it costs. Any information would be great, thanks! I'm really looking for some information about how much it would cost on a monthly or yearly basis to care for the horse.
What would i need to care for a horse EVERYTHING??? i am getting a horse for the first time tomorrow i have my fence ready but i don't know what i need to take care of on any sites or information you have is much appreciated i need to know everything that i need to take care of him i already have my fence and stall/shed ready
I'm interested in buying a horse, but have never owned one. What do I need? I'm interested in buying a horse, but I really need to know detailed information about caring for, buying, and anything else about horse. I'd like information about the cost of care of horses. I'd also like to know informaiton about learning to ride better and any helpful information about horses in general. I have taken riding lessons for four years and I know some of the basics, but I want to know more.
How to understand what and how much to feed a horse? I am 16 years old. I have been crazy about horses my entire life and I currently co board my own horse. I am an intermediate rider and I am steadily learning about horse care through experience. I know that when you are determining what and how much to feed a horse you need to take into consideration their: weight, breed, workload, medical conditions etc... but I never could understand how people could look at all that and determine what and how much to feed a horse with just that information. Could anyone help me understand this? Thank you in advance for all the help! = D
Websites for horse information/jobs? Ok everyone... I have no commitments for the whole entire week next week :D I am going to dedicate it 100% to horses but I'm only in the saddle for an hour a day. So I want to read/study/learn horsie things :) In terms of the path I want to take my career, I am only interested in racing and show jumping (NO dressage/xcountry/western/etc). I am on a tight student budget and I CAN'T buy any more horse books than I already have lol. And I have read the ones I have over and over and over again. Normally I just borrow books from the library and make notes on them. But that is time consuming hehe. Do you know any good websites that have lots of horse info? I am interested in riding, horse racing, jumping, general horsemanship, upkeep and care, horse psychology, everything pretty much! List LOTS! Also interested in websites that list horse jobs. I know a few of these sites but would like to see if there are more out there I haven't gotten to yet :) I am in Canada by the way, so need sites that would list jobs in Canada. List all the webpages you know! I would like to have a huge list of sites I can learn stuff from. Thanks so much!

horse information on buying/adopting? I have been riding for 8 years and have been around horses all my life. However i took some time off because i fractured my spine and got back into riding about 2 months ago and im perfectly fine. We are looking into buying a horse and i'm most likely buying from petfinder to adopt because it is not that expensive. The boarding price for my barn is around 700 to 1000. Regular is 700 which i'll probably get which includes being fed and watered and mucked once a day because i can tack, untack, bathe, and groom on my own. But what about farrier, vet, and other general care? Is that extra? Do i have to pay for a specific feed or does that come with the regular board? I probably have to buy my own saddle, bridle, pads, and blankets. How do i know if my horse needs boots or not? What other items should i have with me such as flyspray or vitamins or anything or will the barn take care of that? Any other information that i need to know about purchasing everything beforehand or things i can get afterwards would be much appreciated!!! PLEASE HELP any advice is helpful thanks!
Horse information for beginners. Where to go, what to read.? I have always loved horses from a distance. I've ridden a few times, but I live in the city and so I have never had the opportunity to be around them a lot. Recently though, I met my husbands aunt who raises and breeds American Paints. We will be moving to the country near her in a few months and she has promised to help me learn more and maybe eventually help me get one. I know she will be an amazing source of info, but I would like to have some good base knowledge before we move. I have taken out several books from the library.... a horse encyclopedia and several children's books. I was hoping though that someone could direct me on where to go for beginners information. On horses in general, Paints more specifically. On care, riding, habits etc. Thank you for your help in advance.
Where can I find free good horse training videos? I don't want to go buy videos if I can find some free so I want to try to look for some first. I got a new horse and I have someone helping me learn but I still want to look for information when I am not over at the stable. If you know of any sites that I can see free videos of proper horse care, riding, basic horse stuff, etc. That would be a big help!
Information on caring for a Horse? Going to be a first time horse owner! 10 points best answer!? Okay, so I have been riding horses for what will be 4 years this summer. It has been on and off but I have had about 13-14 months formal lessons. I ride mainly Western but can ride English and have rode English. I would be considered an intermediate to advanced-intermediate rider. The only thing is, other than tacking up a horse and mucking outa stall- I am clueless about vet costs, farrier costs, how often this is done, when it is done, ect ect. I am shopping around for horses and have about 6 different horses on my list. The horse that I am most likely will be getting (since it seems perfect for me and is a reasonable price)... here is a description of her- AGAIN- I will be a FIRST TIME horse owner! The horse is a 14 year old, turning 15 years old this fall, Mare. She is 15.1 hh (which is the same height that I have rode for years). She is an American Quarter Horse. She is registered. She has had I believe the girl said 2 foals. I reviewed medical papers with my mom and the horse has NEVER had any medical problems. She is field boarded (which is what she will be if I get her) with 6 other horses in a very large pasture. She is suited for an intermediate rider because she can act hot headed if she gets excited. The owners admited that she had a cribbing problem when she was younger (they have had her for 8 years) but she got over that several years ago. She is rode with a bitless bridle (or war bridle) and always have been. I rode her at a walk, trot, canter, and gallop and she did very well. She also started jumping about a year ago. So that is the info I will give right now. SO. Questions: Is the age, ect of the horse good for a person like me? (16 years old, 5 foot 7 inches, 140 pounds?). She will be field boarded with other horses If I get her (which I fell in love with her so I really want to). IF she is rode with a bitless bridle, will her teeth still need floated? IF so, how much does that cost and how often does it need done? How often does a vet need to visit for shots and dewormers and how much does that also cost? Finally, I know the farrier visits every 6 weeks and she needs all 4 feet done with just regular shoes, nothing special- how much would that cost? My field board is $200 dollars a month. So how much total a month or every other month would my expenses be? 250-300$ or more? I do not want to get a horse that I will not be able to afford! If you have any other comments or ideas of what I should ask her owner next time I visit them, please let me know! Thanks so much!
half lease horse information? ok my mom and i have a deal going, if i get all as and bs then shell lease a horse for me. so i was wondering whopays for what ( vet, farrier, dentist) how much riding time would i get ( wholud that be worked out in the contract?) how much care would be provided ( feed, turn out, stalls) no rude answers please!
I would really like to own a horse. Can anyone help? I live in an area where horses are not permitted. With economy the way it is, horse feed went through the roof, and I hear it is a lot of work to care for one. It takes dedication, and I know that. But, I would like to know some tips on HOW TO GAIN MY PARENTS' TRUST so perhaps they might consider buying one and keeping it on another ranch or something. Does anyone have estimates on costs of keeping a horse per month? Per year? Maybe that would help if I had a total $ amount. I would be extremely dedicated, but I need preparation and training to own one. I have asked them in the past, and they have said no; maybe there is a way to make a compromise. I would really like to own one, to death. But, I need as much advice as possible. I need information on horse care and tack and what not. Please help. Any information would be wonderful. Thank you. PS - BIG IMPORTANT POINT: Where I live, SO MANY PEOPLE do not want horses anymore, so they are literally giving them away. I would like to know the process of attaining one, not where to get them. Thank you.

Horse Book? Can anyone reccommend a book on horses? It should have lots of breed information, info on horse care, terminology, and basic medical/anatomy. Thanks!
I am ready for my first horse, what breed should I get? Plus other questions!? I have been riding and taking care of some horses down the road (once in a while) for a while, and I wonder what breed I should get. I want a beginner horse, one that listens well. Quarter Horses are highly recommended a lot of people say. Are there any other breeds I should look into? Also, how many acres does a horse need for pasture? I want a barefoot horse as well. They are cheaper. Anyone have any suggestions about getting a horse? (I don't need any information about stable, horse care, just the horse in general as well as some pasture ideas)
How to care for working draft horses? I have four drafts that stay in two joint pens (middle gate usually kept open) that totals about a half acre in size during the winter time. I have not ever seen two of the horses do a lot of running or bucking but, the other two always seem to have enough room to do so when they choose too. We feed them about 150 lbs of good quality hay once per day (how they have been fed for the past 3 or more years now) and they eat it throughout the night and they tend to be picking up small scraps... shaft, etc when we go to feed them again. When they go out to work they get a high fat concentrate feed (amount varies with each horse and their body condition) and some extra hay as well. I would say two of the four are close to a 7.5 bcs, one is about a 6.5 bcs and the last one is about a 5 or 5.5 bcs. I find that they are happy to go to work and seem very healthy to me however, we have gotten complaints saying they are getting enough to eat and they are kept in an inhumane environment which is too cramped for the four horses to be in. I am looking for care information pertaining to draft horses and perhaps a few educated opinions on the care of our drafts... Keep in mind these guys have been very healthy for the past three or four years living in the same pens every winter (occasionally with additional horses that need some close attention) and being feed the same way. Oh, they also have access to fresh water with a heater at all times and pretty much sleep during the day in the sun as they would be working in the evenings when they go to work. There are also two shelters the horses can use as well as a clump of trees (where they would usually hang out). Ordinarily they would be working every evening, alternating between the two teams. The two that don't really run around a whole lot also don't really run when turned out into a large pasture, unless everyone else is then they go just to stay with the herd. I am not overly worried about the complaints but, have been asked to put together a bit of a letter in regards to their care/the care of draft horses for the people who field the complaints so that they may deal with them.
Are there any horse stables in Graffenvier, Germany? Hi my name is Kayla and I live in Germany. I have just started horse ridding lessons and learning how to care for horses Well I was just wondering if there are any horse stables in Graffenvier, Germany Because I'm going to be moving there. Can any one give any information on any Horse stables close to there I would really appreciate any info you can give if there is. Websites would be nice to if you know any Thanks
Any way to find information on paperless horse? Pictures included.? A few weeks ago we received a horse, "Speedy", from some barrel racing friends of ours. They were not able to give him the proper care he needed like senior supplement, so they decided it best to give him to us to find a good home for him. We had no information on him, just that he was about 20 yrs old, he came from arkansas, and he's a barrel racer/pole bender. By his conformation, anyone who sees him guesses he's appendix. I've been trying to look up sire's with "speed" or "speedy" in the name, though I know that's kind of hopeless cause there's so many out there. Anyway, if anyone could tell me if it's possible to track down this guy's history, that would be great. Pictures: http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h247/go-zip-go/IMG_8010.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h247/go-zip-go/IMG_8031.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h247/go-zip-go/IMG_7999.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h247/go-zip-go/IMG_79981.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h247/go-zip-go/IMG_79851.jpg http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h247/go-zip-go/IMG_79701.jpg ------------------ no brands. no markings besides a little roaning on rear right leg and blaze on face. I know this is hopeless, but I just thought I'd try. thank you. edit: roaning on left rear leg. oops. I already lifted up his lip to look for a tat. No such luck. I realize the barn name/registered name bit. I'm not new to horses. I do know that people can take the barn name from the horse's registered name so that's why I thought of looking up sire's with the name of "speedy" in them. I did find one sire named "speedy hemp", sorrel, born in 1980 from texas. I looked up his offspring years, and in the year 1988 he had a son (sorrel gelding) named "kegis speedy 666". doubt I'm on the right track, but to me it's worth it. again, I know this is basically a hopeless search, but it's just something I'd really love to find the solution to. the only information the previous owners had on him is what I shared.
how can i persuade my parents to get me a horse??? hi, i just wanted to know if anyone had any tips on how i can get my parents to get me a horse?! i have been riding for 4/5 years and have done numerous horse care and management courses and riding courses! i have done presentations and information on horse ownership but nothing has seemed to work, when it comes down to it they still say NO!!! i have also presented them with alternitives like loaning and sharing but the aren't convinced! it is driving me round the bend as all of my friends have horses at the riding school where i ride,(and they are all either too small, too big or too advanced for me)i know i am ready for the commitment and time effort of a horse. i wouldn't mind if it was just a loan horse or something but any help would be appriciated!! and i am 13 nearly 14!!! so thanks for your help i know how expensive horses are and that is why i said i am willing to get a loan share horse so any tips on that ? i am in the U.K
do u think im ready for a horse? ok im 12 years old been riding for at least 5-6 years now.i call my self intermediate my instructor lets me help her train some of her horses.i help her out almost everyday during the summer she trusts me to ride by myself,my first show my instructor took me to was a horse trials with a pony unpredictable but she told me i was a good enough rider to handle her.every single book i read is adult horse information book ex:wounds, care, riding, what safety procedures for horses, anyways i know a lot about them i just wanted to know your opinion if you think im ready to get a horse p.s. my instructor thinks im a good rider im willing to give up christmas for a horse so my parents could save money 4 me and my birthday i really don't care as long as its for a horse
Leasing a horse: any good information? I've been begging my parents for about a year to consider leasing a horse. Ok sounds bratty but its the truth ^_^ im pretty sure I can do it, I have experience washing/grooming, bridling, tacking, cleaning tack, leading, riding ext. I ride hunter/jumper for about 4 years. I really would like to get into the work of caring for a horse and my parents are pretty sure we are financially ready, although they, as well as myself aren't completely sure what a rough estimate of the costs are. I think I know roughly what it is for owning a horse (between 4-6 thousand?) but know nothing as to leasing. I know it all depends on the leaser and the contract but just some numbers would be really helpful. Also, I heard someone earlier mention at my barn part board. Can someone explain what part board is? Is it a step lower from leasing a horse? Thanks for all your help! =)
How does leasing a horse exactly work? I've been taking lessons for a year now and the stable I ride at boards horses and also leases horses. I think that they may lease some of the lesson horses. Would I be better off posting an ad explaining that I'm looking for someone who wants to lease their horse out? About how expensive is it? Do larger stables usually pay for vet care and feed with the lease fee? THANKS FOR ANY INFORMATION YOU CAN PROVIDE!
What is a good horse breed...? My family and I are in the process of looking for a horse. We have a stable for boarding lined up already. Would would be a good horse to get? My mom has had horses since she was very young until she was about 20 years old, but i have never had horse so im not sure what is a good breed to get, It would mainly be me, my mom, and my younger sister(12) riding and taking care of the horse. And information would be great thanks :) also we are adopting our horse from a pet rescue place. Thanks! NO rude answer please Also im 16 years old
Anyone have information about Barrel Racing? I am very interested in western riding and learning Barrel Racing, and would like any information about it. Right now, however, I must start slow with the first step! I need to 'relearn' how to ride a horse safely! I do know alot about the care and training of horses, but I have not had the chance to actualy ride alot. Any info is nice! I might give up raising animals for FFA if I can really get into this sport.
Do you think I'm ready to get a horse? I think I am. My parents on the other hand, don't want to get one. My friends also think I really deserve one. I've been riding and taking care of horses for about 6 years. I know what to feed, how to ride, groom, etc. Well, I think the big problem is money. My parents say we don't have that much money, but we only pay 800 for rent and then my mom goes and buys all this useless expensive stuff. I try to save money, but my parents and sister always take it for stuff, which I don't think is fair because they don't pay me back then expect me to pay for a lot of my own stuff. So what do you think? Do you think I should be able to get a horse? Anymore information that's needed just put it down and come check the question later, I'll update it. Thanks in advance:) ~Lexi~
What does a horse need, and how much does it cost annually to keep one? I live in Ontario, Canada and my husband and I recently bought a farmhouse in a country and we plan on moving there sometime in the Summer. There's a huge pasture and a stable (that's breaking apart) on the lot. I thought it'd be a good idea to get a horse or two, because I've always wanted one. I want to know the following: Will a horse get along with a German Shepherd and a large husky? On average, how much does a horse cost? About how much will one horse cost annually, and how much is spent on what? How much does health care cost for a horse? Any information will help, thanks! Also, what breeds should I consider? I live in Canada so it's fairly cold from October to March/April. I've taken horseback riding lessons for about 5 years a couple years back, and I can say horses tend to like me and I can ride decently well.
What is the cost to take care of a horse? I need a roundabout number for the yearly cost. Or even if you could tell me where I can find some information on this. Thanks! Hmm...I think I need to be a little more specific. First off, I'm not looking to buy a horse or anything. I'm doing a project for class and I'm offering to bring horseback riding into an existing beach resort. So, I want to find out how much it would cost to own a horse so that I could figure out my pricing in order to gain profit for both myself and the resort. Obviously, I would want them to be very well taken care of so it doesn't matter if it costs a lot. I may not be a horseback rider but I do love horses. They are very beautiful animals! I also know that I would have to find a large enough area for the horses to be in but I'm not including the set up price right now. However, if you want to include any of that feel free! It would probably give me more ideas anyway and that's something I could definitely use for this project. ^_^ Thanks! Oh, and yes, I would have more than one horse but I just need the cost of one for now.
Horse books ? Have you ever read Horses for Dummies? I'm thinking about getting my aunt that book. I want her to have a book that is mainly general horse care and knowledge including sings of colic and other illnesses, worming information, general horsemanship like leading and loading on the trailer. Also, some Western tack information. I'm limited to the books at Tractor Supply because I'm using a gift card, and here are the one's that I know will be there (I'm sure there's more at the store). http://www.tractorsupply.com/gifts-home/books-manuals/horse-books/ Have you read any of those? She only needs something basic. She's not training anything, and she doesn't ride much. She has two trail horses, that she takes to a few trail rides a year. It just worries me when she asks me things like "What is colic?"
horse literature and options for a horse career? Me: I LOVE horses, always have, always will. I haven't had the chance to ride as much as I'd like to. But for the past year I've been riding twice a week and doing great, before that I tried riding at a horrible place and before that I rode during the summer at camps and worked at the stables for free lessons. I currently live abroad and my instructor speaks barely any english but she's great otherwise and is teaching me basic dressage and jumping. I'd probably consider myself an intermediate rider. I have experience riding lots of different horses and currently ride several in my lessons. From a stubborn, too smart for his own good stallion, a 5 year old arabian goof ball, and an amazing but extremely nervous dressage horse. First off: What books/dvds do you recomend to give me more theorey on english riding/showing, horse care/health, how horses think, horse training, and other horse careers. And is a horse related career an option for me? as a riding instructor or horse trainer or something. I've thought a lot about becoming a vet whitch I will persue if this 2 week summer vet information camp proves it's a profession for me(I can't apply till I'm 15) I'm really good in science classes and am currently top of my class in an IB program school and have recieved the principles award for 3 cosecutive years (aka I've got the grades to become a vet) Right but I also LOVE working with young kids. I also have worked with quite a few young horses whitch I LOVE. I know what it's like to be a riding instructor as I've recieved lessons from many and have watched lessons. I've also watched people train young horses and think that would be amazing. I have a later start on riding than most and have never shown but could I still make a living as a trainer/riding instructor? Thanks! And Sorry my question is so long, I just had too much to say!
horse first aid books? i feel like i know little information on horse health, before i get a horse (in a few years) i would need to learn this so i can take good care of the horse and know how to treat wound and injuries like cuts, stings, lameness, bed sores, etc. its be nice to know how to treat common injuries like those and most of the minor stuff that happens in horses and the more major stuff like founder and colic that can occur and how to prevent those. so what book would you recommend thank you. sorry if this is confusing and i would like a book dedicated only to the first aid stuff and not to talk about other things
Horses : Any information would be great! 10 points up for grabs!? I have a fair few questions in mind, and would appriciate any help, or links to relevent websites thanks :D 1. At what age are horses generally willing to do as you ask (canter, gallop, stop etc) ? 2. Where can you find information on raising a horse from a very young age such as teaching it yourself all the things you would like it to do rather than buying an older horse who already knows these things, if you get what i mean... (because i don't think i explained myself very well :S) 3. How much would a very young horse cost? 4. How much would an older horse with skills such as trotting etc cost? 5. How much per week or month would a horse cost to feed and for bedding etc? 6. Around how much would it cost to house a horse at a stable per week or month? Sorry for so many questions but I'm very interested in caring for a horse :D Please, any help or links would be fab :D thanks again Also, would you reccommend rescue a horse for a first time owner? Thanks
Where can I find the best information? We are moving on an acredge in about a year and a half, I have always wanted horses and have a sum of money saved up to get them when I finally have the space. However, truthfully, I have NO idea on what is involved in caring for horses. I do have the time to learn and prepare myself, so I was wondering if anyone can recoment a really good book or site on caring for horses. OR, you yourself, if you have any pointers for a beginner, that would be great! Thank you!
Horse Slaughter Interview? Hi, my name is Judy and I am doing my environmental history class project on horse slaughter/transportation of horses for slaughter. I was hoping for someone knowledgeable or somewhat knowledgeable on this issue to answer me, but if u don't and just like horses or care about it that's fine! i just need an interview for my class, but more than one may answer. You can just answer whatever you know and leave the ones you don't know blank. I need this by monday morning. Thank you !!!! ~!!! ^ 0 ^ 1. What are the main problems or problems with horse slaughter and/or the transport of horses for slaughter? 2. Should it be allowed? Why or why not? 3. Why are horses important to our society? Or to the world in general? Why is it a taboo to some countries (such as the US and Britain) to eat horse meat? 4. Why is horse meat considered a delicacy to some countries? What do you think of this? 5. What can be done to the horses that are unwanted (and thus sent to the slaughterhouse)? Are there enough horse rescue centers in the US? Will the many unwanted horses be too much strain on the rescue centers’ funds? Are there any solutions to these issues? Did anyone take any steps to solve these issues? 6. How are owners whose horses are stolen and then sent to the slaughter houses compensated, if they are even compensated? Is there any way to prevent stolen horses from being slaughtered? 7. In an article I read (http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/oct/01/horseracing.sport), it says that racehorse owners are over breeding their horses; is this true? Then is this one of the causes of horse slaughter? What can be done to solve it? Is it possible to be solved? 8. What are other causes? Are there any possible solutions to these causes? 9. What can people do to help ease this situation, besides writing letters to representatives? What can the government do? Do you see this happening? 10. Which and what are organizations doing to help ease the situation? Is it working? Are there organizations that are making this progress difficult? Why are they doing this? 11. What is the government’s stand on this issue? Such as the difference(s) between the democratic and the representative’s stand on the issue of transporting horses for slaughter? 12. Are there any additional information or opinions you have on horse slaughter that you would like to share with me? Thank you once again for your time!
I am getting a Sheep for my horse and i have a couple of questions? Buying a sheep for my Horse, questions about care!!!? I am buying a sheep for my horse because he is lonely and he needs a friend. I have a few questions.... How many flakes of hay do you give a mature sheep a day? Annual shots (i know u have to de-worm, any other shots)? How high of fencing ( i already have 3 rows of no barbed wire 5ft high) How often do u trim their hooves? How do you trim Sheep hooves? Please information on tips and tools! The ewe will have to be out year round, it gets up to +35 celcious in the summer and down to -45 celcious in the winter, tips on how to keep her warm (can you brush the snow off them, i know you can't with horses) Thanks! Any other information for first time sheep owners would help!!!
Can A Vet Tech Care for Their Own Animals? I'm going to be going to school to be a Veterinary Technician. I understand they can do just about the same things as Veterinarians can do, besides diagnose and such. Can a vet tech administer shots and run tests on their own animals? For example, I have a horse who needs to be tested for WestNile yearly. Would I be able to test my horse and send it in to get the results, or do I still need to have a vet come out and do that? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Has anybody ever dealt with an eye injury with their horse? I never in my years with horses have dealt with an eye injury. My mare started tearing up about about two weeks ago and her eye would run. I thought perhaps allergies, and she didn't seem to be in pain, so I didn't think much of it. But it continued, so today I had the vet out to look at her. She has an ulcer on her eye and has to take both a pill and and have cream in her eye 4 times a day. She still has sight in the eye and the vet seems to think she'll be okay and we caught it early, but I guess I just want some reassurance an ulcer will clear up with proper care and be fine. I feel really bad that I didn't recognize it as an injury at first and wasted time having a vet look at her. If anybody else has dealt with eye injuries in horses or knows of a good resource in which to get information, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.

What do I need to know about taking care of my PET cow? I live out in the country and I love cows. I was thinking about getting a cow to keep in my large back yard and it would be only a pet. I know that there has to be at least an acre per cow, but I am only going to keep it as a pet, so can I just feed it hay instead of letting it graze on grass all day? Also, just like they make minuture horses, do they make miniature cows? If so, what is the breed? Around how much does the average dairy cow cost? How much does a cow eat each day? Remember, I love cows and it will be a pet, not a livestock animal that will graze all day. Please send any information to me by giving me your email address and I will email you with more questions. Thank You!
What goes into owning a horse? My husband and I are looking to buy a house and some of them have a barn with stables in them. I've always considered getting a horse, but I've never had one and have never been around one. Some insight into the care of horses and the best ways to be around horses to find out if I even like them would be great! Also, how much does it cost to get a horse and provide vet care and food? Can you adopt a horse the way you can a dog or cat from a horse rescue? Advantages/Disadvantages of this for a 1st time horse-owner? Thank you so much I appreciate all the information! No I am not looking for a lawn ornament, if I was getting a wooden horse would be a lot cheaper!
