Horse jumping training tips? I am training my horse to jump, which he is loving and is very good at, but I need some tips on what to do and stuff. I am doing cross rails on the ground with him right now, and he's getting the hang of it but are there any tips that would be useful that would make his training easier or quicker? :) Thanks.
horse training tips?. (Teaching horse to turn)? i have a saddlebred mare and i have finished breaking her under saddle and rode her while my dad lead her around now im moving into turning left and right and i am asking how to do it. I ride english and when using english bridle, the rider is suppose to pull the rein in not out and keep the rein tight so what i did is stand on her left side, reach over her shoulder, grabbed the rein on her right side, held it tight same length as the left rein and pulled in asking her to turn right, but she swung her head and backed up really fast. So what i did next is clipped the lead rope on the bit and ran the rope through her side and her back coming back to her left side and pull which gave her no choice but turn and she did, after a couple of tries i unclipped the rope and did same thing before i added the rope and she turned as i clipped the rope on the left side and pull she started to go crazy. So how can i teach her to turn?, i will be using her as a jumping horse, I dont have a round pen or arena so i will have to do it in an open pasture. Im asking for your help and if it does not work we will send her to a training school. Please dont tell me that i need to get a trainer or give me any rude comments, i want to do this by myself first but if it dont work i will get a trainer. If you have any tips please tell me. Thanks! Like I said i dont need anyone saying i need to send her to a trainer because i will do that, but first i want to see if anyones advice will work and if it dont i will send her off to a trainer. also i am located in jacksonville, TX Thank you for the help eberyone! I will try this and if it doesn't work I will get s trainer
Horse training tips needed for green 3 year old APHA.? I recently bought an APHA gelding. He had been ridden abour 15 times before I bought him, but he's pretty willing to learn. He's been ridden in a round pen mostly and has no manners in the arena. I'm wondering if anyone can give me some tips on continuing his training... He doesn't like to stay on the fence in the arena. He mostly moves away from the fence on the opposite side of the arena from the gate, but there's also a miniature horse along that fence as well. I'm not sure if this is due to a gate sour issue or not, but if so, how can I help this problem? Also, he likes to decide when he wants to stop/slow on his own. and sometimes even when you give him a kick, he will just back up like he doesn't feel like going forward. If someone has any tips that may help correct these problems, please let me know. In addition, when he decides he wants to move towards the gate, and I try to turn him the other way, he doesn't respond. I don't want to use too harsh of hands and keep his mouth soft, but I'm not sure what to do when he backs up and turns toward the gate instead of moving forward. PLEASE HELP.
Horse Training tips? Hello there, so my mom's friend has a 2 year old gelding, he's a black qh named donovan aka donnie, he is trained for barrels, so she doesn't have the time to work with him, so she offered me a free lease on him, i accepted, now, i will be training him, i have experience with horses, i've trained horses for h/j but i'll be training him in barrels, we are having my friend who has trained a few barrel horses and lives on a farm that breeds barrel horses come and help us about once or twice a week. Does anybody have any tips for somebody who isn't exactly that experinced training horses or western on tips for training him? Thanks. :] And please no mean comments, i am getting help, from somebody who knows what their doing, and i've had experince with horses before, but i dont' ride western all that often and i've never done barrels, so anyt tips would be great. nono, we aren't going to start running him until he gets a bit older, right now we are basically just working on ground work, and getting him used to the barrels and that type of thing, only thing we are going to do course wise is walking hima round the barrels.

Tips On Training My Young Horse To Jump? I am currently training my 6yro to jump, you might think he's a bit old to be learning first time but he had an incident with jumping when he was younger, plus he used to have a badly fitted saddle that pinched his withers. So now i am trying to build up his confidence with jumping bit by bit. He goes over poles and tiny crosses fine but he needs to jump bigger. Does anyone have any tips on training horses to jump and building up there confidence with jumping? No silly answers please. Thanks
Any tips on training a horse? I have a horse that's three years old at the moment and barely even halter broke. She flinches when you touch her ears and we've only had the saddle and bridle on her once, which took nearly an hour to do. She allowed us to sit on her back, but freaked out when we had someone on her back and someone leading her. I've been seeing her on a daily basis for four months and she's barely shown any progress. She's already head strong on the lead and likes to just go back to the barn to feed. Any tips on where else I could start or any easy tips I could try to handle her better? I'm ready to ride this horse!
Tips on training your own horse? Hi there, so I would like to start training my own horse, I am currently looking at a few for sale. This would be for a 4-H project The only problem is, I would like to teach the horse western, not English which is what I am currently riding. Any tips on this?
Horse Training Tips? We are pretty experienced riders and need help training a few horses. One horse, a palomino, will not move when you mount. She is not responding to sqeezing, vocal commands, or kicks. We lunge regularly and mount often she needs the "click". Another horse, a bay, has the same problem but when he gets started he stops often and doesnt move continuously. The last horse, a buckskin, is great at turning and very responsive but sometimes bites when you are on. We would like to learn how to train them loose jumping and fix their habits. Please give us step by step directions for each horse and then a set of directions for loose jumping. Thanks for answering! AF, TBF, QHF We dont have a crop but will get one in the future. We dont want to depend on it for the future. But thanks! We dont want to have any objections to our thoughts. WE DO NOT WANT TO USE A CROP!
Horse Training Tips for One-Eyed Waler Mare? Alright, here's the thing. I have a rising eight year old grey paint, wild caught, one eyed Waler mare named Monica. She's very green, extremely fat (massive grass belly), has an in-need-of-weaning colt at foot who will be moving in next door to daddy soon, and is currently in working (lunging, long raining, desensitizing, standing square, leg stretches, neck stretches, teaching her that the lead rope being thrown over her back will not kill her, the works) She's a little nervous, but that's to be expected taking into account that she was caught with one eye torn out (far side), but she's getting better and I think she's about ready to take it a little further (she has no top line, and throwing a saddle on her until such a time as she has regained it will only cause her pain). Anyone out there have any good tips or trust building or working exercises I could do with her? I'd send her to Jenny Craig, but I don't think she'll take a horse ;P BTW, I'm 15 and I'm a girl, so even if parelli did make men feel less manly, I don't count. Thus the name Miss Hiss, reptile and horse owner :) I always brush her before I do any work with her, just to make her feel more secure, and so that she knows I’m not there to hurt her. I always approach her from the near side first, and if I do need to approach her from the blind side I always say something like 'hey, Mon' to cue her in. When I move from the near side to the blind side I always make sure that she knows I'm there, weather I just run a hand along her or she twists her head around to watch me. She's nervous; she can't afford to be jumpy

Tips on training a horse to jump? I have a new 5 year old QH. We havent started training him to jump yet. But hopefully sometime soon we will. Anyways i've been wondering, how will you know when your horse is ready to move up. Like say you've been jumping 2ft. How will you know when hes ready to jump 2'3 or 2'6? And how would you know when hes at his max jumping height?

I am training my horse to barrel race any tips? I want to get into barrel racing and me and my horse are green at barral racing. She is 4 and a tennesse walking horse. I want to train her to barral race and any tips for me would help alot to! I am a "advanced beginner" i guess i am not afraid of my horse and i canter alot but only galloped once and over a very short distance. (like 10 yards) I am training her to neck rein and it is coming along good. I am looking for more than the stuff you will find in books. Like for example i am looking for past experinces with training a horse to barral race. (i cant sell my horse to get another one and i am only allowed her)
Trail horse training tips? I am 18 and work at a horse barn. I bought my 14 year old paint mare a little over a year ago. This summer after I graduate high school, I would like to take her to Brown County Horseman's Campground outside Nashville, IN. I have gone there hundreds of times with friends, but never gotten the chance to take my own mare there. My mare is very sturdy and in shape. However, she is sometimes fairly spooky and stubborn. She hates to go out of rides alone, and she will fight me every step of the way. I don't really have anyone to ride with, so riding alone is my only option when I'm at home. What are some things I can do to make riding alone easier. It's leaving the barn that is the hard part. Once we get a good 100-200 years away, she will usually chill out a bit. I don't let her get her way when she throws her little fits. However, as often as I ride, I figured it would be getting better by now. Am I doing anything wrong and what should I change. Maybe some horses will just ALWAYS test you. Haha. I love my mare to death, I just wish she wasn't so herd-bound sometimes. Secondly, when my mare and I are out in the fields or in the woods, if I ever ask her to go faster than a trot, she always tries to bolt for the barn. I will ask her to canter, she will take three or four good strides then spin on a dime and run like a banshee for the barn. I've yet to fall off her and I've always gotten her stopped before she gets far, but I must say... this is annoying. What can I do to end this? Thanks. Kyoko, I supposed I should have been more careful with how I worded this. I do work with my horse. She is fine with bags and weird noises. When I bought her, I worked with her for months in the arena, walking over tarps, riding with trash bags on sticks, pulling logs, and rocks in a can. She gets "spooky," or really just more flustered than anything when she is alone. She is pastured alone. She has two pastures on each side of her's that have horses in them, but she is the only horse in her pasture. I am 18 and trying to graduate high school and maintain my acceptance in Purdue University. So no, I do not have the time right now to work with her daily and nightly. I would just like some tips on making my horse more independent. I believe my horse and I have a very good bond. She waits for me at the gate and though I'm not a parelli follower, I have done join up with her and other natural horsemanship exercises with her. We have a bond, I would just like it to be stronger.

I want to train him flying lead changes so that we can place better at shows. If anyone has any hints or tricks on how you can do this that would be great!
can anyone give me good tips on training an off the track horse? alright, so my instructor helped me train my first horse, and ive decided to get another one now, and train it myself. ive been riding for about 15 years now multiple time weekly, and ive had my horse for years now, but when i got him, he was just a colt who had to be broken and trained. now im getting an off the track thoroughbred and im looking for some good training tips. obviously, it will be different than training a colt. my instructor has trained many off the track horses and of course she will always be there for help, but what good advice do you guys have? the race horses owner is a very close friend of mine, and ive spent a lot of time with this horse already. he is the super sweet type of loveable horse who wants do just do an awesome job at what ever you ask him to do. super smart boy. can figure out what hes being asked to do quite quickly. thats why i choose him for my first horse to train on my own, i will be getting him for fairly cheap because my friend knows he will be going to a good home and what now, and i think he will be easier than a super hyper high strung ex race horse. hes a wonderful boy, also he is 5 now, no injuries at all in his racing career, just ready to find his next job. was a wonderful race horse though, still is. one of those horses that you see on the track and say "wow, that horse can run" thats why i was so surprised when my friend said she was selling him. could easily7 keep going in his racing career, but i dont want to miss the opportunity for this amazing horse!! i just think he is perfect for a first horse to train on your own. but anyways, good tips please?? anything helps, but the answer with the most info/ tips gets 10 pts!!! thanks you guys!! prob should have added this. he wasnt kept at a racing stable unless he was at the races. he was kept in a huge pasture with 5 other geldings (not race horse geldings though. an arab, another thoroughbred, a clydes cross, a mule and a quarter horse) he is not high strung at all. got to be in a pasture all the time and was only race excersized during race season. the rest of the time it was simple easy lunge training in a round pen to keep him in shape. sometimes even with a rider on hise back(but on a lunge line and after being lunged for a while already) and always did fine with that. not a race saddle than either, simple english saddle, and never just took off at a gallop or anything with rider in the round pen. just doesnt know any cues at all or has ever been ridden outside of the track for races/practice, or with a rider just to keep him used to the weight in a round pen lunging, at trot? canter. or walk at the end. thanks again guys!!! to barefoot: he is being sold because she is being affected by the economy like the rest of us. she has to down size now to only 2-3 horsed (from the 27 she now has) and simply wants to find a suitable home for all. and no worries, i would not even take a horse from a relative without a proper vet check over, and of course, i will have a time period to make sure the horse will work. giving the circimstances, it will obviously be a few month trial period, in a contract signed by both parties.
training a barrel horse. any tips? I have a 6 year old QH mare that i am wanting to train on barrels. My plan is to teach her to stop quick and turn sharp before i introduce her to the barrels. That way she turns around them the proper way, fast and sharp! Is this the right method i should take, or should i go directly to working the barrels? Is there a website i could go to talk to other people training their horses to get more tips and things? I have a lot more questions that are related to training my horse. All of your input is welcome!
How can I learn more about horse training? I've read a lot and watched many videos and training in person, although I've never had much experience with actual training. So while I'm very knowledgeable I haven't put it into practice yet. Right now i definitely don't feel prepared to buy and train my own horse. Are there other ways I cant get hands-on? In a few years I hope to buy an OTTB and train it myself. To do that I need to be very experienced in training obviously. Tips?
Need tips on training horse for barrels? Ok, well I have a 6 yr old, 15 hand skipper w and leo bred QH mare. I've already started training her on barrels about a month ago, and she definitely knows the pattern already. But she's still a little green and she bends her head real well, but not her body. She also knows how to pick up the right lead. She also rates real well. But when I ask her to pick up the lope, she blows past the first barrel. So I need some tips on bending. I try figure eights and spiraling in a circle, also flexing at the standstill. But nothing really seems to work. She has a long back and neck, so i don't know if that affects it. Your answers will be appreciated! Oh, and I'm planning to go with my friend and trailer to a big barrel race with $14,000 dollars added. And this is in December so I'm hoping she will improve much!
tips for clicker training your horse? Hey im starting clicker training with my mare and i was wondering if any one has any tips for me, also what are some good clickers, please tell me the advantages of the ones you suggest also if you want to and if you have clicker trained your horse you can tell me about your experience and if clicker training helped you and your horses relationship and was a good method of training. What are your views on clicker training horses? do you have better methods? I am personally alittle worried about the giving them treats, because i have a horse that luvs to bite! so if you have any opinions on that it would be appretiated. thanks!
Tips on training a barrel horse? hey there, so my mom's friend has a 2 year old gelding that i am leasing, he doesn't have any time to work with Donovan. (The horse.) or train him, so he asked me if i would, donnie is bred for barrels,i have 8 years h/j experince, so this is all new to me, does anybody have any tips? I've done western a few times, but i've never run barrels before, so we'd both be learning, we have my friend who is a really expereinced barrel / gamer helping us a few times a week, but does anybody have any tips on what i can do? I don't plan on running him, just getting him used to it and sch. oooh, no, i don't plan on starting him on the pattern any time soon. i just want to know what to do to get him ready. :] we might walk it once or twice, and he'll sniff the barrels and such. but we wouldn't run it by any means. he's way too young.
Disobedient Horse, unconfident rider, tips for training? I have a 10 yr old gelding and he is absolutely gorgeous, though he has thrown me off twice bitten someone (not a dentist or anything) and raised his leg to kick me. He also wont let you put a bridle on him (he lifts his head high and clamps his mouth shut). I have lost alot of confidence through him ( i didnt ride another horse for atleast 3 months, and i havent riden him for like 2years). I need some tips and activities which can raise my confidence and train him to be more ridable. By the way i was 11 at the time.
Tips On Hobble Training My Horse? I Have an almost 3yo QH and I want hobble train him and I am looking for some tips on how to make it easier for him and easier for me. Also what are the best hobbles to use? There are several different kinds, nylon, leather, felt lined, fleece lined, vaquero among other kinds and I want to know the best kind to use. Thank's Much. I should clarify that my horse is already broke to ride and I am doing this merely as an extention of his training. I own a horse that was trained to accept hobbles by his previous owner and due to that training when he get's his feet in a fence, which he does frequently being very inquisitive, he doesn't freak out and hurt himself. So I merely want to give my other horse the benefit of having that same mindset. I've raised him from a bab and would never do anything to hurt my baby. My fences are very safe, my other horse is just "special", he has a very short attention span and tries to crawl through the fence when he's bored. All my neighbors hate him. I would get rid of him if he wasn't such an amazing work horse.
dose eny one have eny tips for training my horse to event??? i have a 10 year (very high strung) old TB gelding with really good jumper blood lines and i really want to train him too event and hes very stubborn and he is a really good prospect i have a trainer but shes not really into eventing.... but he would love the jumping in show jumping and would love the running and jumping in x country and i don't think he would be to fond of dressage every thing we have started but like i said he's very stubborne but very willing @ the same time i have been ride in for 7 years.. HELP please!!!!
Any tips on training a horse to jump? I own a 15.3 hand dark bay quarter horse. I show him in western pleasure, hunt seat, showmanship, halter, equitation, and horsemanship. He is built similar to this horse, http://www.doubledquarterhorses.com/Reference/ZipToImpress.jpg He is very athletic and wins halter ALL the time! I have started him on some jumping and so far he has done OK. I need him to be able to fluently jump 2.5 in about 2 months. When I said started I mean literally this week. I haven't lunged him over jumps yet but am planning to do that tonight. I have jumped him about 1.5 so far and he seems to enjoy it but still occasionally refuses!(most do!) Does anyone have any tips for getting him to be able to clear 2.5 easily? Or how high do you think he can jump from his height, weight(1100) etc? I know..every horse is different and that you never know but just a guess? Also, any tips for getting him to never refuse? Thanks! :)
Tips for training a young horse to collect? Under the saddle, mostly, but if anyone has tips for collection on a lunge line that would be much appreciated. I ride English, but I'm temporarily using a Western saddle (although an English bridle and direct reining) because my horse is young and was mostly trained Western Pleasure. My horse is 5, and good tempered but can be stubborn. He is not particularly spooky but needs a lot of exercise to keep him on good behavior. I have walked/trotted/cantered and I got him a little less than a year ago when he was four. He has a very quick trot and canter though and I want to collect him more than just using my reins to slow him. I do work about once a week with a trainer so any advice I will check with her first, and don't worry, I am being responsible so no need to tell me to seek help. I've got plenty of resources. Clarification: I know that collection is different than slowing down. But I tried slowing him down because he was so opposite-of-collected that it felt wild so I tried slowing him down because he was getting excited running around like that. I'm hoping to achieve a noticeable neck arch and hindquarters tucked in. I've had brief moments where I felt him being really on the bit while riding but I can't keep it going and he just runs like a maniac with no control at all on the lungle line. Thanks :)
Anyone got some tips about training a barrel horse? So I am recently training my 7 yr old Arab to run barrels and poles. I would like to compete with him at local gymkahnas next year but I dont really know where to start. I have trained young horses before but english, not western or for barrels. I have competed for about 3 years with my trained barrel horse but i sold her over the summer due to a lack of time. Now i want to start with a new horse thats a bit younger. He is still a little green, he knows all the basics but he is high strung. Right now I have done minimal running with him I am just trail riding him to get his focus on me. Ive been practicing turning, stopping, and control for a while because I feel they are essential for a good barrel horse. How should I intoduce actually running the patterns with him? I do not have a ring to ride in, just dirt roads, trails, and big open fields. I have run him on all of these areas and boy let me tell you! Unbelievable! However, like I said... hes a tid bit wild but hes a great listener and he loves to please. If any one with training experience in this area could give me some pointers that would be awsome. Thanks!

Does anyone have any tips on breaking in a horse? So my instructor is also our horse trainer and asks for help when training the horses. As long as you help her she'll give you free lessons so its cool. There is a horse that is about 3 years old and has had no arena training at all. She doesn't even know how to lunge. The great thing about helping my instructor is you also learn a lot about training. Does anyone have some tips for me? No tip is dumb!
