Horse Training Dvd Knowledge Base
Looking for some horse training dvd reccomendations? I want to begin training my male pinto horse who is going to turn two years old this september 2010. I have no knowledge as to how to begin and i really would like a complete and comprehensive dvd set. The training i want for my horse is for general riding and good behavior. I want it to bow down to me every time it sees me coming...LOL im kidding. Just basic stop, go, come, introducing the saddle, gestures, gaining its trust/respect, etc. Also on a side note, my horse likes to bite occasionally, not in a violent manner but likes to nip here and there, a habit since the day it was born. any suggestions on how to break that habit? Thank you for your help!
Is it worth the money to get these horse training DVD's? I was looking at buying some training DVD's. Let me know if you have these or what you think of them -were they helpful, worth the money, could you have lived with out them, etc. Jody Strand's 'Unbridled' AQHA 'Showing to Win' (western pleasure) AQHA 'Judging Western Pleasure' AQHA 'S&S Hunter Under Saddle' also if you know of any really good DVD's that helped with western pleasure, HUS, showmanship, or patterns. I"m really interested in working on getting my horses lope slower, so more western.

Any Horse Training Books You Can Recommend? I'm about to finish "Storey's Guide to Training Horses" by Heather Smith Thomas. It was okay, but there are some holes in the information. And she is extremely repetitive in common sense advice. Is there anything you can recommend? I want a book by an author that KNOWS how a horse thinks and reacts. And, I don't want a book that is primarily on training in different styles of riding. I'll be starting my horse myself in all areas of training. Thanks! *DVD recommendations welcome, too!*
training dvd for thoroughbreds? Does anyone know of someone who makes dvd's and specializes in thoroughbreds? I've been watching Clinton Anderson's dvd's and they are great but my horse is a Thoroughbred and they tend to behave differently and need to be handeled slightly differently than the Quarter Horses I normally see people working with.
How do you train a horse to do dressage? I am learning how to train horses and break them and everything and I thought it would be kind of cool to teach dressage. I don't have a lot of money for lessons in that kind of training but I was wondering if there was a website that would tell or if there was a dvd or book that had a professional trainer who would explain step by step like Clinton Anderson. Thanks. I would like to learn to teach piaffe
horse training shows on tv? I just found out that I can get RFDTV on my cable I used to have it when I had the dish so I havent watched in about 2 years. My question is who are all these trainers having shows and making tons of money off of their so called natural horsemanship? People like Ray Ainsworth, Julie Goodnight, Ryan Gingerich, Leslie Lan, Parelli, Craig Cameron, and Clinton Anderson. Now I love Clinton Anderson, but my point is Ive been Training for over 28 years and non of this stuff is new to me, Weve been using these techniques forever. Every program that I watched followed with please buy my series of DVD's Im thinking WOW these people are just making a killing with their products and peoples need to have special halters, lead ropes and whips.....jeez LOLOL I missed my calling. Dragon eyes.....LOL you made me laugh, thanks
Pat Parelli, Dennis Reis, or Clinton Anderson - Who's methods/programs work best? I've been wanting to buy a full horse training DVD set for a long while now, but I'm torn between three different trainers. Pat Parelli, Dennis Reis, and Clinton Anderson. Pat Parelli's methods seem to be pretty amazing, but I want to know if he has DVDs on how to start a young horse and completely train it all the way through. It seems that all I ever see him do is ground work, or playing games with problem horses. Clinton anderson seems like a really great trainer, but from what I've seen all of his training DVDs are separate and out of order, you cannot just buy a complete training set. Dennis Reis has complete training sets, like Pat Parelli, but I don't think he is as well known as these other two trainers. From what I've watched of him on RFD TV I really like him. But I want the public's opinion. I want to know what you all think of each of these trainers, your experiences with them, and over all who's program you all think would be the best investment for me and my horses. I want a program that I can use on both untrained horses that have no previous handling, and horses that are trained, or have problems, need retraining, etc. I have been riding and handling horses for about 12 years, my father is a veterinarian. I rode under a 5x world champion instructor and trainer for 3 years and am currently riding under a different european trainer. I understand fully well the dangers of handling horses.

john lyons dvd on unbroke horse question? So I just signed up for giddyupflix.com, and the one dvd I really really really want to watch is out of stock. who knows when it will get returned. So my question is, since there are like 4 discs in that dvd set of breaking in horses, do you really need to watch them in order? I read his book "John Lyons on horses" so I understand the way he trains, I just really want to see it in action to help it make more sense, but if the first dvd is going to be gone for a while is it ok to see the other things demonstrated in the other discs first or do they go in order by the horses that he's working with and I should see how they progress? Just wondering for those of you who have watched these. thanks!
How do I teach my horse Parelli's Seven Games? I've watched the DVD that Parelli sells, read numerous online articles, and yet I can't seem to get it. To me it seems that Shawnee (my horse) may be to trained for the basic games, I'm not sure though. Can anyone give me some hints with the Seven Games and how to teach them.... Maybe I'm doing something wrong... Thanks!
Horse trailering -- I typed for 5 minutes but the Q was closed when I tried to submit it - here's your answer I'm going to reiterate a suggestion I've seen several times already: get the Parelli horse-loading DVD. Do not: blindfold the horse or sedate the horse (except in the case of an genuine emergency where you truly didn't have the time to adequately train the horse beforehand) or lure the horse on with treats. Horses have a hierarchy of needs: (1) safety (2) comfort (3) play (4) food. This means that, until a horse's safety issues are met, they are not going to be persuaded by comfort or the promise of food. For example, if I flicked you repeatedly in the shoulder, you might move away from me a little to get me to stop. If, on the other hand, I was flicking you on the right side and on the left side was the edge of the cliff, I'm not going to talk you into dropping off the cliff simply because I'm annoying you. The same goes for whacking a horse on the butt with a broom, or flicking with a whip, etc. If a horse thinks it's going to die if it gets in that trailer, no a
Advice with training my youngster? I grew up riding and showing English, but always leasing someone else's horse. I got out of horses while I went to school and traveled, but now I'm back home and last spring I bought myself a yearling (my first horse!). It was my intention to send him away to have him trained. But recently I have been thinking that I want to do it myself. I have all the equipment for lungeing and ground driving, but it would be my first time training a horse. If it can be done, why can't I do it? So I have been collecting as much info as I can online, videos on youtube, library books...I am going to start him this spring. Does anyone have any advice for me (to add to my growing cache of training opinions)...any tips or tricks for ground driving or lungeing? Any links to your favorite trainer's sites....any particular book or DVD that you swear by? My horse has excellent basic ground manners, and he is as laid back as they come. He's small too...QH. I am fairly laid back as well, I have what you would call a "quiet hand", I don't use a chain over the nose on my horse (I hate that lungeing video on youtube where the girl keeps cracking the chain over her horse's face....not my kind of training), I don't yell at him...when he does something wrong, I basically make it harder for him to do that particular action than to do what I am asking...when he does what I am asking, I release. I have considered clicker training as well. Any opinions on clicker training? Haha sorry for the long question! Hope to get some insightful answers to help me out! Cheers Oh yeah, I forgot I wanted this question answered too....one trainer's opinion is to start ground driving with a halter. She says when they are wearing a bit, they are dealing with new changes in their balance and it's too much all at once. I was thinking that is good advice. What do you think? Thanks for the comments so far...I just wanted toadd in that I am not planning to back him until he is 3 years old. He is maturing very well...I was just hoping to do some light ground driving and VERY light lungeing over the summer.
Saddle breaking a horse - practical method? I deleted my last post because someone decided to personally attack us based on nothing more than their assumptions, and honestly it was a waste of pixels. If anyone is inclined to attack someone for trying to start their horse themselves, please try to read and understand before you start freaking out on me, okay? Just to clarify, no one is looking for a rush job. We're looking for steps we can do with this horse on our own for effectively saddle breaking her until we can afford a professional trainer, instead of letting her rot in the pasture. We're not professionals, we have done amazing things with her on the ground, but because neither of us has saddle broke a horse, we would like some videos, books, or methods to help us start her in the saddle the right way until we can get someone to work with her. We have about 3 months of savings we need to build up to afford this training, so the question is what can we work on in the meantime that will be the next step between now and then. We were trying to sell her in order to put her in the hands of someone who could afford a professional trainer now, or who was a professional trainer themselves. If we can get her started, we don't want to sell her, because we've put a ton of time and effort into this horse, and we love her. She is a RESCUE, so she has her share of problems, and we did not create them, so don't sit there and yell at me about them or blame me for them. The guy who attacked our methods clearly doesn't understand our horse. He's never even met our horse. Our horse was evaluated by a certified trainer, and we put her through her verbal cues in front of him. He said we had done everything so far very well, and quoted us a price for finishing her in the saddle. We can't afford it. If we could, we would. Obviously do it at home training is not much of a standin for professional training. She is the kind of horse that needs to have a job though - she thrives on learning new things, but is a slow learner because she needs consistency and repetition to feel comfortable. That is all i meant by 'stubborn'. We did try to tack her up and saddle her and mount her, because when we got her we were told she was completely saddle broke. She isn't! She reacted with the typical reaction of a horse that hasn't been under saddle - she freaked out. DUH. I don't see how that is our fault either, we tried to give her a riding evaluation based on what we had been told about her history, and she wasn't having it. She has been starved, beaten with a lunge whip, injured in the trailer, ridden on the track at some point, and she has problems. We didn't inflict any of those problems, and we have managed to work a lot of them out. Our methods must be effective because when we first got her, she was scared of people, and now comes running up to the fence. We even have her lunging, changing gaits and directions on verbal cues - which is nothing short of a miracle given that she was beaten with the lunging whip before! She will lead for anyone now. Even a 12 yr old girl has led her, she is no longer pushy or scared on the ground. She will pick up her feet for anyone instead of planting them firmly on the ground. I'm sure that is all the result of a terrible rush job, right? Oh wait. Anyways, if anyone helpful can point us in the direction of a program, dvd's, or books - our current budget is about 100$ because we'd like to put the rest of our available money towards saving for the trainer. We just need some options on simple things we can do with her to de-sensitize her to the saddle and bridle, and to pressure on her back. Thank you in advance to anyone with any helpful answers.
You have the horse - how would you retrain it? I have a 6yo horse that has done Parelli for 2 years. I posted a question yesterday as to if the new handler/owner should also know the Parelli methods. Im not going out and doing a Parelli course (there are none near me) I also don't plan on paying heaps of money for DVD's to watch, as I don't believe they are an effective training tool. So I have no way of learning the "secrets" as Parelli likes to call them on his web site! AND I'm not getting an orange stick!!!!! I can only assume he acts this way because of Parelli methods (I have no other Parelli horse to measure it against). I have been having improvement and success in handling this horse. It has been generally positive, despite him bucking me off. LOL I am not against common sense horsemanship (NH), I would like to think that I have practiced it my whole life. I was taught to communicate with the horse and to gain the horses trust and respect. All in a non violent, calm and slow and steady process. I have just backed my 3 1/2yo filly after a very slow and gradual process of years (I've had her since birth) and she did not buck or hump, because she was very well prepared for riding. SO.... How would you proceed with a horse that is oversensitive to the handler? (moves away constantly when approached, pulls back when tied, hates being groomed, very pushy, difficult around his head etc. Lots of the issues people discussed yesterday that seem typical with Parelli horses) It is new for me because I have not come across a horse who is so mistrusting of everything around him. He spooks and runs even when a car enters the premises? What would be YOUR plan of attack? To cut out the dependence on Parelli methods and tools and to get back to common sense horsemanship. Has anyone successfully worked with a horse to over come these issues after Parelli? I would be interested to compare your thoughts against my own.... Isn't the internet great! To listen to the experiences of people around the world ;-) Thanks in advance. *** ADD - countrygurl91 - you could not be more surprised than me! LOL The previous owner has given several conflicting statements, which is why I've turned to some more trusted souls on YA ;-) I have been surprised to find so many other people have had the same "issues" with Parelli. Hence not wanting to continue with his training methods. I'm conflicted because I do actually like him. I know I can work with these issues and some answers here have given me some extra things to think about. Should a $5000 horse act like this? I don't think I should have to retain one that was supposedly trained!! Can I stop him bucking? After I have my CT scans, IF I'm cleared to ever ride again ;-( I have to decide IF I WANT to take that risk. I'm trying to sort my head about, if it is worth all the effort to go on with him and if anyone else has managed to do it. I did watch some of the DUHorseman videos last week and I liked some of his theory's. He is a bit more about common sense. *** ADD - Barefoottrimmer - I'm sorry you feel that way. You have misread my question, but thanks for contributing ;-) *** Also I actually really liked the last answer you gave me, you hit the nail on the head. I'm asking about Parelli because I don't understand the method and I'm trying to learn. I consider I learn about horses EVERY single day, so "no" I don't know it all and I never will. I used the term backed because I don't like the term broken in ;-) *** Add - Bliss - Thanks for your comments. I'm sad to be misunderstood, but everyone is entitled to an opinion - hence my thumbs up for contributing. You always make good constructive comments (even when you don't agree with something) and I enjoy reading them ;-) I had also hoped to catch smokie's opinion.
Would a training video , like this be of interest? I am working on a training video of a symposium i went to last year. it was with the world champion, multi gold dressage rider, heikke kemmer. (we shot with high def cameras, the clinician was miked up for clear audio) and have taken 16 hours of instruction (2 days 8 horses) and condensed it into 2, 1 hour dvd's. it is really more of a documentation of the training that took place those two days. it is not a "how to" type video but it shows the clinician evaltuating 8 horses of verying levels of dressage training (from just started 3 year olds to a 9 year grand prix mare), and after her quick assesment the viewer sees the rider work through some issues and learn how to move toward the next step. i thought it was a fascinating event, and the horses and riders were really the creame of the crop. i just want to get some feed back from ya users and see what you think? it will be priced at $55.00 for the set. Hi, the event was at Paxton Farm in Ohio, where they also had the stallions in training for the 100 day test. The 14 hour trip, after 2 non stop days at Iron Springs Kuering, was well worth it:) It is funny how I can offer the same thing to 2 different facilities and get 2 entirely different repsonses...LOL. I did contact the farm in Md. The registry had me go to Ohio. I always learn something new at the differnt clinics and shows I attend:)
Who is a Clinton Anderson fan? I learned the jist of his training methods but I really want to see the training DVD personally and I was thinking of buying one of his DVDs. The thing is, I don't know which one to buy.... My horse's biggest problem are his ground manners and understanding who's the boss. I do have help with my one trainer but my horse respects HIM not ME. I'd like to get firsthand knowledge and learn for myself seeing the actual pro do it himself and see if I can learn better that way... I've been researching the DVDs online and a few of them sound really good but I don't know which one to get! Does anyone have any experience with him and the training?
Clinton Anderson Training - Does it really work? I have seen Clinton Anderson and would like to use some of his methods in combo with other ideas and things I have done myself. But with the 'Handy Stick' I know he does a lot of ground work which i know is very important but how does your horse translate the 'stick' to when you get on your horse and dont have the stick? I would like to do more advanced and have a young Arabian, which is broke but would like to get her more supple and bridleless as well maybe? Can anyone give me any help about Anderson, and would it be worth it for me to invest into his DVD's?
Break away roping???? Reining horses? Hey, I was trying to find some instructional dvd's with tips on learning how to break away rope, run barrels, training your horse to be a reining horse, and running poles. Also, do you have to train a horse to be a reining horse while it is first being broke to ride, or later in life can it be taught to be a reining horse? I am currently trying to locate a trainer, I was just wanting some dvds to watch that might show me a little about the events before I actually try it.
Books, articles and dvds for handling young horses? I'm looking for books, online articles or DVD's that are helpful for handling young horses, including weanling and yearling age(specifically) up through starting them under saddle. I've heard that John Lyon's "Bringing Up Baby" book is good, but am looking for a wide variety of books, articles and dvds, preferably with problem solving section, and explanation of psychology behind the handling/training. Thank you!
My parents are driving me crazy!!!? This has been going on for a long period of time now. I am going in a direction my parents do not approve of. I'm not drinking or doing drugs or any stupid crap like that, I am merely investing all of my time and patience into the care for, and training of horses. I attend clinics, seminars, and purchase books and DVD's. I currently have two clients who pay me around 160 a months to get some advanced groundwork and under saddle techniques done. Over three years, several of my clients horses are now in the arena earning their points. I can get any horse into any trailer, and make them love it. And the number of horses that I train Keeps increasing! I got about 4 emails today but I can only choose 2, due to school (sigh) I have always been consistent about school, but there was one period where I just lost everything and almost failed 3 classes but brought them up in the last week. It's been three years, and they still don't trust me to even lead them out of a paper bag. I have been in the A's and B's range all of High school and I finish my homework in class. But when I tell that to my parents, they accuse me of lying and the yelling starts. It satarts on the subject of school, then to my room, the way I eat, who my FRIENDS are, and how disrespectful and abusing I am to them. I have learned to grin and bear it, and I trained myself to say "okay" at the end before they threaten to take the horse stuff away from me. Then I lose it. Now I know I need to control myself more when it comes to this, but this isn't just a hobby anymore. I am PAID to do this! They just act like I was such a dissapointment to them because I'm not going to become a vet, or an architecht (their suggestions when I told them of my dream, how supportive =] ) I make all of my own money, and I have to wait until I'm 18 to buy a horse so I can sign the waver MYSELF. I love to surf the net. and when I'm "doing" my (complete) homework, because apparently I lied about it, I will surf. But with my Father appearing out of nowhere to check on me, I am "caught goofing around" more yelling ensues. I need some help...(moving out not an option, two years left lol, then I am so outta here!)
Pat Parelli and John Lyons. Which do you prefer? I have Pat Peralli's Level 1 Dvd set that I borrowed from someone and want to get started right away, but I hear there are some things in his lessons that people don't agree with. I don't know too much about John Lyons, except that he's high up there in great Trainers. I just got my first horse. What kind of training should I do?

same old trailering question? yea so...like the other billion people who complain about not being able to trailer their horse...I'm with them... :) Well my horse (actually the horse I train) trailered fine before her owner took her to a show without me..and I dont know what happened there but she has been a pain in the a s s to get in the trailer ever since then, so I pretty much dont really know where to go from here. I got a clinton anderson rope halter and love it! but i still cant get her on the trailer. I plan on getting his DVD on trailering but until then it would be nice just to get some advice on what to do. I dont wanna force her on but its getting old.....I need her to go on a trailer
The Parelli natural horsemanship program...? Hi, to any of those who have tried Parelli; I have tried to find out as much as I could about the program, but I'm reluctant to start. I do like Parelli's methods more than the other various horsemen.. But there are so many DVD's to choose from, and they are all quite expensive.. And the money is what's stalling me.. So is it worth it? And also, I'm really curious as to how the training works. How does it teach you on the DVD(s), and are you able to effectively do the same with your horse (without confusion)? Is it really possible to accomplish Parelli only with the dvds (and no trainer)? And if you could, I'd like to hear more about your opinion/experiences with the Parelli program.

What facts do you know about the middle ages, what was the middle ages like? I just bought a dvd on the middle ages. I watched it and thought it was lacking but it was good. I think it said that the middle ages was between the fifth and the fourteenth century. It talked about surfs (which are different then slaves surfs owned property given to them by there masters and surfs had there marriages recongnized and were aloud to maintain their family), kings, castels, religion and religious war. It also talked about knights. It said that people often died about 29 years of age (I cant beleive not younger.) It said that fighting on horse back was something that only people could do when they were raised to train with a hourse on early age. I beleive it was the eight century when they had holsters for their wepons and before that they couldnt use houses ride on during fights. It kept talking about how it wasnt as a dark time as people now a days assumed it to be. I never understood why the experts said that. It also broke the middle ages down to three time periods...the early middle ages, the middle middle ages and the late middle ages.
