I am training my horse to barrel race any tips? I want to get into barrel racing and me and my horse are green at barral racing. She is 4 and a tennesse walking horse. I want to train her to barral race and any tips for me would help alot to! I am a "advanced beginner" i guess i am not afraid of my horse and i canter alot but only galloped once and over a very short distance. (like 10 yards) I am training her to neck rein and it is coming along good. I am looking for more than the stuff you will find in books. Like for example i am looking for past experinces with training a horse to barral race. (i cant sell my horse to get another one and i am only allowed her)
Is an 8 year old horse young enough to start training for barrel racing? What equipment do i need to train&race Is an 8 year old horse young enough to start training for barrel racing? What equipment do I need for barrel racing? To train her and to race?
A race horse training question? I was wondering what is the real reason race horses (TB) are started at a younger age then most other horses/areas of riding? I'm not saying it's a bad thing but I am wondering the real reason behind it. thanks
Race Horse Training, Help wanted! ? Hello, in the Spring there is going to be a PONY Race, so far that I know of there are 5-7 ponies entering, all between 12.hh - 13.3hh it's really just for fun, the winner wins a Ribbon and $100. Most of the Ponies Entering have never raced before, but are actuallu hunter Jumper Ponies, So anyways, I need some help training my 4yr. old welsh (13.2hh) gelding. he's Fast. We've practiced on the Track a few times, Any Tips would be Great! although I only want him to act this way, at Races. when I ride him normal I would like him to listen. and Not try to Pull, and Gallop off. Thanks. Thanks everyone for the Help :)
RACE HORSE TRAINING?HELP? Heyy. well I have a 4 yr. old race Pony. Can 2nd at a Race so Far, just wondering do you think that if I use Blinders/Blinkers on him it will help him focus better? Also When I am riding him I can tell He not even Half Trying. At the End of a Race we came in 2nd he Barely even Broke a Sweat. Plus we've seen him Move! But in the Race he seems Slow. Please Help. READ BELOW! _______________ HE HAS NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT OR BADLY ROUGHED IN A FIELD. WE'VE HAD HIM SINCE FOAL. HE WAS BORN HERE. AND HE LOVES TO COMPETE. HE JUST SEEMS TO BE NERVOUS AT THE TRACK WITH HORSES HE DOESN'T KNOW. WHEN HE IS ON OUR TRACK RACING WITH OUR HORSES HE IS GREAT!!!
Training an ex-race horse? I'm interested in purchasing a 5 year old AQHA gelding, who just finished his racing career, apparently he made about $40,000 dollars in his career. Anyways I want to re-train him to barrel race. I've worked with difficult horses before, but I was just wondering if re-training ex-race horses is extra difficult to do? And does anyone know what race horses are taught to do besides run? Do they know leads, collection, ground work, etc? -Thanks in advance!
training a race horse? I've been looking at horses and found one I really like she's 4 years old thoroughbred and fresh from the track. She's actually pretty good, surprisingly easy at the canter compared to other race horses I've ridden. So I've leased her for a month and at the end of the month I'll decide if I buy her. Yesterday was my first day with her and I jumped her for her first time. We did a small x and she went over it without refusing but as soon as we got over the jump so took off at a mad gallop. Now I consider myself an experienced rider, my last horse was a green broke and he gave me hell, but he taught me what riding was really all about. Any way I have a two questions. First of all are race horses usually taught to lunge? I forgot to ask if she knew how and I think it would be nice to lunge her before I ride. Second, do you have any tips for training her to jump? I was thinking I'd start her out with pole piles. I just got back from the farm and tried lunging her. When I got her into the arena as soon as I loosened up the lunge line she automatically started going in circles so apparently they do lunge race horses, but when I asked her to go clock wise she seemed confuse, but picked up on it after a while. So they must have only lunged her in the racing direction

What is a day like for a race horse? I am looking into adopting an ex-harness race horse and thought that it might be helpful to know what "normal" training they may have gone through - what their day may have been like on and around the track. What are some training methods, tools, philosophies? How does their prior training affect their ability to learn a new way? What are some precautions one should take in retraining an ex-race horse? Can you recommend a trainer specialized in natural horse training methods that is around the Madison, Wisconsin area?
Training a Standardbred Race Horse? Hello, Please only reply if you have at least a little bit of knowledge on how to train a harness racing horse. So, this might take a bit to explain I'm sorry it will be a longer question :). So my Dad is in a partnership with some friends and they have a stable of Harness horses, Pacers. They are boarded and trained at a professional trainers stable. The only time I have met the horses is in the winners circle so far lol. One of the horses is partially owned by the trainer and he wants to sell her. She was in $10,000+ claiming races with purses of $5000 - $6500 . Lately she has been racing in really low claimers racing for like $3000 and hasn't been doing very well. She has been in the money pretty much every race even in the slump but hasn't seen any first's since 2009. So the trainer wants to sell her for these reasons. She is pretty well blooded and is a nice strong even gaited horse. She is 5 and knows all the equipment and everything. My dad is thinking about buying her for me to train. I'm not sure this is such a good idea :S I know how to handle horses well and have my own riding horse but race horses aren't really even the same species in my mind. I haven't a clue about how to even harness her! Let alone driving. What would probably happen is either she would move to another trainers barn for a little while and I would go out to his barn and help him to get to know about harnessing and the care of race horses. Or possibly we might give her a month or so for a break and just keep her at my farm on pasture to let her have a rest. I live near someone who owns a few racehorses and has a track so i could probably use their track to train her once I figured things out. She would probably move out to the trainers farm after a few months of little work at least until I figure things out even in the second scenario. Does anyone have any tips about training Standardbreds? What are your opinions? Should I tell my dad I don't want to do this or give it a try? I think it would be a great experience but I don't want to ruin the horse and make her unusable for anyone else as a racehorse should she get bought down the road.

What's the tips to be part of horse show and barrel racing training for a wanna be show horse person? I have been only raising horses for almost four or five years and one of my horse just had a little colt about six days ago. Two of my horses are mares and they are more of trail walkers buddies. I wanted to show the saddlebred horse (who was just had the baby colt) and barrel racing but I know I have to wait for while before I do any training. Any tips and training?
Training my horse to race (revised)? Well, I'm training my almost two year old to race. I have a crop, & I smack him on the butt with it, or on the hind legs. I don't think he is reaching his full speed, though. =( I know it's not from smacking him hard enough, they leave these little marks on him. It's not bad, though, they can be rubbed & you can't see them anymore. How do I get him to go faster? He's a Thoroughbred. No saying that this is cruel or something like that. When I watch racing, they hit there horses pretty hard & they go full speed. Mine just won't. How do I get him to go? We won't be on the official track, just betting with friends... I also use spurs, it doesn't help either, he still doesn't seem to go full speed. I don't use the spurs hard, don't want to hurt him. If Julie answers this question, I'm being serious! My friends bet up to $300 on a race, there horses don't seem to be hurting in anyway, so why not do it? Don't say something like "use a crowbar" or something dumb like that.
Horse racing training license? In the UK, how do you go about getting a horse racing training license? I'm currently studying for an equine degree so will have relevant experience, would I have to do some kind of course or just take a test, and where/how do you take this test? Or is it simply a case of applying?
I would like to start training my horse to jump. However he had an injury three years ago..? I have a 6 year old, ex-race horse, who sprained a tendon while racing three years ago. He was given shock therapy and his injury is now fully healed. He is a fast learner and I would love to start training him to jump. The highest being only around 2 feet. Do you think this is too risky? Or should I continue training?
training race horses? When a race horse is bred to race.. how is it raised and trained? and what do you train the horse to do? does the horse know to collect? canter? or what? any advanced movements like lateral work to make them more athletic? (i know the horse knows these movements natrual but are they taught the aids!?) thanks!

What states will grandfather you into a trainers license if you own a race horse? I have been an Assistant for 9 years in the industry and now own a race horse and want to train him myself. What states would grandfather you in as owner/trainer without having to take another test?
RACE HORSE - PROBLEMS AND ISSUES/TRAINING HELP PLEASE.? HEY, I HAVE A 4YR. OLD RACE PONY. HE RACED BEFORE BUT ALWAYS SEEM TO BE NERVOUS WITH OTHER HORSES. Thoroughbred Race horse stance? Ok so i am training my ex-race horse for inhand. Showmanship etc. She needs to stand square. I am training her just fine except: She seems to always want to stand with her front feet square and the and one back foot her right back foot forward. Like and arabian. : * . kinda like that lol when she needs to be like this : : I was wondering if there is a specific ways race horses are trained to stand, or is this just my horse? Just wondering, never really thought about it until i had a race horse. Thanks!
Racing horse training? Why do they train horses so early in mornings?
Was Dawns Delight the oldest winning flat race horse in the last 50 years? This game and genuine horse was owned and trained by Ken Ivory, and I backed it when it won a race in the 1990s at the age of 17years. Have there been any older winners?
Do you think race horses should be trained at a later age than 2? As many people know, race horses start getting trained and raced at the fragile age of only 2 years old. At this stage the horse is still growing and it's skeletal structure isn't as strong as it is a few years later. As a result, there is a high chance of them getting seriously injured. Most racehorses are retired by the end of their fourth year due to injury, chronic illness or an inability to win in higher classes.
Does anyone have an amazing horse training story? I was wondering if any ones horse had an story about how they got to them besides just the normal sell/buy. My story: During hurricane katrina my horse McGuire was in Louisiana and was abandoned to be left alone very skinny swimming in the water. The vet up the road from me went there to rescue animals and came back with my now very healthy purebred Thoroughbred. He was the very first horse my sister trained because he used to be a race horse and even won some races :) but now he is trained in english and does shows although he still loves to go to the beach and sprint as fast as he can. Well that's his story do you have one?

4X a week horse training... am I going to notice a difference in my horse? Hi there, So I have never had one of my horses in training before (i have only had lessons with them). Currently my 8 year old off track thoroughbred is in training at a hunter/jumper barn. I have shown him at many walk/trot English shows mostly in 4-H and for the most part he is a fantastic even tempered horse even though it was his first year of showing. I got him in February, and have worked with him almost every day, so I know for the most part what to expect from him while doing basic riding. When I got him the previous owner said he had some jumping training and such too, so I have been jumping some trot crossrails. Anyway, he has trouble with his leads (which is why I showed him mostly walk/trot). He is 50/50 for what lead he picks up and then he gets an attitude if he gets the wrong one and wont want to start over. He also does not have a pace to his canter, some days he canters like a western pleasure horse and I have to keep kicking him cause he wants to trot again. and other days he canters like a race horse... most of the time he is somewhere in the middle. Anyway, he is now getting ridden 4 times a week by a professional trainer. She is working on his canter and also on some basic jumping.... I have not ridden him this month since he has been in training. I am just wondering if at the end of the month when I ride him, will I see a difference in his canter??? Do you think I will notice anything different from when I used to ride him? It is only a month of training, but I am just curious... thanks! EDIT: I forgot to add that next month my mom is going to have him ridden by the trainer 2X a week and I will have 2 lessons per week. I am not riding him until I have instruction from the trainer.

Has anyone bought into a percentage of ownership in a thoroughbred race horse? What is or was your experience? I am thinking of buying into a 10% ownership/partnership of a 2 yr old about to start training. Is this the way to go, and what are the pros and cons of such an adventure. Are there any reputable breeders/owners you can suggest that have such a program? thanks in advance.
Is horse racing cruel? Are the horsed trained to run the whole race even if the jockey falls off? I just think it's sad to see the horse continue a race for nothing. I know it's not for long and I'm sure they're well looked after. I just think it's sad it's bet into their brains to do that. Thanks for your answers. Thank you Seawitch, That is a great point too. It's so sad and sick to see horses being rushed off in an ambulance and sometimes being put to sleep. Thank you Seawitch, That is a great point too. Anyone have advice on training a horse for barrels? I am going to train my 5 yr old Quarter Horse mare for Barrel Racing is there any tips or pointers anyone could give me?
How to teach a horse to barrel race? My friend has an Anglo-arab paint cross who is amazing. He can be alittle headstrong but he can turn on a dime and and is as fast as a thourobred. We want to teach him how to barrel race because he seems like he would be really good at it. Could you tell me how we could train him to barrel race? Thanx, any advice would be appreciated. P.S. He is her horse but she keeps him at my farm so this is a joint operation.
can anyone give me good tips on training an off the track horse? alright, so my instructor helped me train my first horse, and ive decided to get another one now, and train it myself. ive been riding for about 15 years now multiple time weekly, and ive had my horse for years now, but when i got him, he was just a colt who had to be broken and trained. now im getting an off the track thoroughbred and im looking for some good training tips. obviously, it will be different than training a colt. my instructor has trained many off the track horses and of course she will always be there for help, but what good advice do you guys have? the race horses owner is a very close friend of mine, and ive spent a lot of time with this horse already. he is the super sweet type of loveable horse who wants do just do an awesome job at what ever you ask him to do. super smart boy. can figure out what hes being asked to do quite quickly. thats why i choose him for my first horse to train on my own, i will be getting him for fairly cheap because my friend knows he will be going to a good home and what now, and i think he will be easier than a super hyper high strung ex race horse. hes a wonderful boy, also he is 5 now, no injuries at all in his racing career, just ready to find his next job. was a wonderful race horse though, still is. one of those horses that you see on the track and say "wow, that horse can run" thats why i was so surprised when my friend said she was selling him. could easily7 keep going in his racing career, but i dont want to miss the opportunity for this amazing horse!! i just think he is perfect for a first horse to train on your own. but anyways, good tips please?? anything helps, but the answer with the most info/ tips gets 10 pts!!! thanks you guys!! prob should have added this. he wasnt kept at a racing stable unless he was at the races. he was kept in a huge pasture with 5 other geldings (not race horse geldings though. an arab, another thoroughbred, a clydes cross, a mule and a quarter horse) he is not high strung at all. got to be in a pasture all the time and was only race excersized during race season. the rest of the time it was simple easy lunge training in a round pen to keep him in shape. sometimes even with a rider on hise back(but on a lunge line and after being lunged for a while already) and always did fine with that. not a race saddle than either, simple english saddle, and never just took off at a gallop or anything with rider in the round pen. just doesnt know any cues at all or has ever been ridden outside of the track for races/practice, or with a rider just to keep him used to the weight in a round pen lunging, at trot? canter. or walk at the end. thanks again guys!!! to barefoot: he is being sold because she is being affected by the economy like the rest of us. she has to down size now to only 2-3 horsed (from the 27 she now has) and simply wants to find a suitable home for all. and no worries, i would not even take a horse from a relative without a proper vet check over, and of course, i will have a time period to make sure the horse will work. giving the circimstances, it will obviously be a few month trial period, in a contract signed by both parties.
How to become a Quater Horse Trainer? So i am 22 years old in college and i feel i am not getting anywhere with my major(Engineering) My passion is Quarter horse racing and nothing would make me happier than training quarter horses (@ Los Alamitos) I grew up around horses so i didnt just wake up today wanting to train horses. how long does it take to train a horse to barrel race? just wondering cuz there is a rodeo 2 months from now in my town and i wanted to know how long would it take , im just in the rodeo for fun and my horse has alot of energy so i think it would be a great way to get rid of some energy
Where can I find a free peer-reviewed journal article on horse racing? I can find some online, but they all charge per article. Is there anywhere that I can find an article that contains anything about race horses such as health, training, etc?
Anyone know any good books on training horses? I don't need to find out how to train them to race, just need to learn the basics of horse training.
How long should a barrel racing horse compete for? My dad thinks its time for me to retire my horse but I think she can go till the end of the rodeo season. She is 5 and a half years old and has been racing for almost three years. I have a younger horse in training right now, do you think I should compete on the new mare or the old one?
Who determines the silks colors for a race rider on a horse? My sister is currently not home but she trains horses (4-h) but i have this question for the Breeders Cup, and the like. Can someone please help?
Do you think I should buy an ex race horse? I am kind of short of money but I have all the experience needed and the money needed to keep a horse at the barn and the tack of course. So I am kind of short of money to buy a horse and so my uncle helped me find an ex race horse that they give for free. We found hundreds of 4-5 year old ex race horses that are sound and fit and are given for free because nowadays people don't have the money or the time of keeping so many horses for races. So I ride for 5 years, since I was 10 and I need to know if I should get an ex race horse and if it is possible to re-train the horse for both dressage and showjumping. Does it mean that an ex race horse will never get his head into collection or that he would rush or even be scared of jumps simply because he had never seen them before? I am confused and time is running cause I need to get a horse before school opens. I have all the Patience of the world to re train the horse if there is chance of it happening. Please help me! What do you think?? Do you have any tips? What is your story with re-training an ex racer? Thanks lots...
