Riding A Horse Knowledge Base
How many years riding experience do you recommend before considering buying a horse? I know owning a horse needs more than just riding, but im actually learning faster at the caring than i am at the actual riding. I haven't been riding long at all, but think i know all the basics in Horse Care. How long you recommend riding for, before considering to buy or lease a horse? And if anyone has any basic Horse riding/ Horse care questions, i'd be willing to try and answer them.

What to expect for first-time horse riding lessons? I'm starting riding lessons shortly after the October long weekend from a well-known friend of mine. He is a professional horse trainer and I've arranged some well-priced private lessons with him. My question is, what should I expect for my first time on a horse, and what should I be aware of. Also, which clothes do I need to wear? I know a helmet, boots, and gloves are essentials. Do I absoloutly have to wear breeches? Please no silly or serious answers. 10 points for most thoughough and informativive answer. Oh, and if you actually ride horses, that would be great! Thanks Ellie I'm doing English Style Riding, not western. All you people have great answers so far! Thanks for all the help you've given me! It will be hard to choose the best answer though.
About how much do horse riding lessons cost? I really want to start riding horses again. I used to and I only took 3 lessons before getting thrown off 4 years ago. I want to start riding again this summer even though I have large fears of getting near a horse. I need to know how much it generally costs because I'd have to convince my parents to let me because I don't have a job. I'd only take lessons once a week. BTW, do you know what type of clothes I'd need to ride a horse?
How do I get into horse back riding? I'm 14, and today after my ice skating lessons, there was a horse show at the fairgrounds where the rink is, and I watched some people about my age riding horses and it looks like sooo much fun! My parents are super supportive and I was wondering like how should I find a good stable and what sort of things should I wear, what sort of lessons I should take, etc...
How can you train a trail riding horse into a show horse? I might be getting a 9 year old gelding who hasnt been ridden for like 2 or 3 years. He is a quarter horse and i want to train him to be a show horse. Also how would i go about riding him... i dont think he knows how to lunge. how "fresh" do you think he would be? please help me!!!!
I'm beginning horse back riding lessons, what do I buy? I've decided to begin horse back riding again after my fourteenth birthday (In a month), and I haven't ridden since the fourth grade. I remember that I had riding pants, a helmet, boots and a crop, but those don't fit anymore. Are those all the things I need to repurchase? Are there any discount stores for beginners? Thanks :D And any tips for riding horses?
How many calories do you burn when riding a horse? I have heard from different sources about how many calories you burn when riding horses. One of them said you burn 230 calories every 15 minutes, while another one said you burn 210 in 30 minutes. If any of you horsey-people know out there, give me an answer! Thanks! Excuse me, but I love horses! I love riding my mare, Sandy, whenever I can, but unfortunantly, out ring is too wet and icey to be riding at this time of year :( I had just heard from different sources how many calories you burn in a certain amount of time while riding horses, and I just wanted to see what some people's ideas were about that. You do not have to become rude, it's just a question. It would help if you could give me your estimate instead of criticizing me, okay? Please don't say that I am fat, either, because I am a very healthy weight for my age. My horse, though, could stand to lose a few pounds :)
Does anyone have a riding horse which has navicular syndrome? I had a horse with an unexplained lameness problem and even after nerve blocks and x rays, the vet wasn't 100% sure what was wrong. She said it was probably navicular disease/syndrome. The horse is sound at a walk, and sound 50% of the time at a canter, but always lame when trotting. I know that corrective shoeing and proper vet care can help him, but I just want to know if anyone else has had any positive experiences with still being able to ride a horse that has navicular syndrome, and what you did to be able to do so. Sorry I should just add: IF I was able to help this horse, I would only be riding him once a fortnight or less, and only slowly on grass. It isn't like I would be competing with him or anything strenuous. He is such a lovely looking and lovely natured horse, that he would just be so wasted if he couldn't be ridden. You truly would have to meet him to understand. I just want to hear if anyone else has any success stories, I don't want to be lectured on whether it is right or wrong, I have already discussed that with my farrier and vet.
I love riding horses but dont have the money to own my own. Is horse leasing smart? I love riding horses but I dont have the money to completly own a horse. I've heard of horse leasing but am not to sure about what it is. What all is involved in it? What do I need to do to "part time own" a horse? Most of all, is it really cheaper then owning your own horse? By how much? And is it really a smart thing to do? HELP!!!

What would be a good choice for a riding horse? I am 6'2", weigh about 220 and live in SW MO where the terrain is flat grassland. I would like a very gentle horse to just ride and check cattle....I am thinking a quarter horse mare, but not really sure?? And in case you cant tell, I have very little riding experience
Do you consider horse riding to be an elitist sport in the UK? I'm not going to make any generalization or judgment because I don't actually not that much about the sport but most horse riders I've met in the UK have been posh/rich. I don't want any answers about horse riding in America, because that is different as you get poor people in states like Texas who ride horses and farmers who uses horses for work, I'm just asking about people who ride horses for pleasure in the UK.
Film Featuring Man Riding Horse Through City? I can remember a clip from a film (possibly a Film Four or Channel Four film), showing a man riding a horse through a city at night, possibly from something or towards something. What to expect when taking horse riding lessons? My boyfriend and I have been thinking about taking horse riding lessons for the past few months. I'm 18 and he's 21, and we have no experience with horses past feeding, watering, and leading them. What would we expect with our first lesson and a few afterward, and, in general, do most instructors allow 2 people to take the lessons together?
I want to start horse riding but I'm concerned about my weight and the limit? I weigh 298lbs. I am definitely trying to lose weight! I want to start horse riding but I'm scared I'll kill a horse by sitting on it. Also, I'd be so embarrassed if I went there and they weighed me and said "sorry, you can't ride the horse". Do you they weigh you when you go horse riding? What is the average weigh limits?

Hiya, Im going to be planning a trip to Orlando next year (May/June) time and one of my dreams (might sound a little silly!) is to do horse riding along the beach (in the evening or something) and sit round a camp fire etc. Is there anywhere in or around Orlando that does that?
