what kind of jobs could i get with a degree in equine studies? i'm a junior in high school, and it just hit me that i have to go to college and major in something!! everyone has told me to major in something i love, so i'm leaning towards animal science with an emphasis in equine studies. when i was little, i always wanted to be a vet, but i don't think i want to be in school that long of a time. what jobs/majors should i consider? thanks!!
What is your experience in leasing horses? Either as owner or leasee? As you may know, I am hoping to be able to find someone to half lease my 4.5 year old mare soon. I also have her on horseville and equine hits. http://www.dreamhorse.com/show_horse.php?form_horse_id=1590904

Anyone have a equine crematorium? I'm thinking of opening one and would like to know the process of getting a license. A friend of mine witnessed a horse jumping out a trailer being towed and it got hit by oncoming traffic, and was killed. I don't think most horse owners have the time or strength to dig a grave for a horse, being that it's illegal in most states.

Suggestions on stopping a horse from weaving ? One of my horses weaves awfull bad! Its rediculas, non stop weaving. I've tried lots of different methods, I've hung milk jugs full of water in his stall so they would get in his way, but he just lowered his head and weaved under them. I have tried getting after him with a whip every time I catch him, but usually he escapes to his run to quickly to do any damage, plus it takes a while to get through the stall door. I've tried just hitting the whip on the stall wall. I don't have time to take him out and walk him for 20 minutes every time he starts. My next resort is an equine shock collar, which I am sure would be very effective. But does anybody have any other suggestions? He lives on MY horse farm. I don't board him, and he has plenty of turnout time. He doesn't go out and play, and only spends a little time grazing, usually he comes back to the gate and starts weaving, or pacing back and forth. He was turned out in a field for almost two years and we just brought him back to the stable, AND his stall has an outdoor run. Well we currently only have 4 horses. One is a VERY high dollar morgan show horse, and we dont turn him out with anybody since he's so valuable. Then we have a crazy grade QH who tries to fight with other horses, and has severely injured Buck (the horse who weaves) many times. The only horse he has to play with is Arizona who is currently at my instructors stable, being started under saddle.

does this annoy anyone else? I also keep a check on the horses for sale sites like horsetopia, craigslist, equine now, equine hits, etc. but it really annoys me when i see someone how is trying to show off in the pictures and the horse looks like it could bolt at any moment i was looking at one ad and this person had a QH stretched way out like a gaited horse, like its back feet and front feet were both stretched out in all the pictures and the person was doing some kinda jumping off it or sitting weird and stuff like that but the horse looked really annoyed and had its ears back and was kinda wide eyed like it wasnt so sure about what was going on does stuff like that annoy anyone else or am i just being limited in my views of the pics?
The search is on for horse trailers... wish me luck, I'm going to need it!? Yes, I did already post this but didn't quite get what I was looking for. Okay, I know this is long but bear with me! I really need help! My parents and I are looking for our first horse trailer. Now, my dad wants something under $800, something like this: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/csw/gr… Now, I don't know about you, but it looks a little... dumpy to me. I think my dad's got some vision of him in our truck with his rusty horse trailer in tow, the cowboy music blasting... So, these are what I'm looking at. Any comments? Which do you like best? Any that you think are asking too much? Personally, I don't mind a little rust, as long as everything's solid. http://www.horsetopia.com/for-sale/local… http://www.horseclicks.com/trailers/tzdf… http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/gr… http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/fo… http://www.freehorseads.com/trailer/phot… http://www.equinehits.com/cm~41025 I think the one on equine hits is kind of cute because it's actually very close to me and Charlie's showing color. My favorite is probably the third one. Ok, just one more question. I know this sounds ridiculous, but Charlie actually LIKES trailering. You have to hold him back, he's so excited to leap into the trailer. I've heard the horses like open trailers better, is this true? What about a horse that LOVES trailer rides? Thanks sooo much everybody! Oh. Sorry everyone. Here's the new links, a bit late I know, but it'd be great if you could still help me. Does anyone know a good website with a horse or stock trailer for sale? I have been looking for my first trailer to buy I'm only 15 but I need a small trailer to take my horses to playdays and other events. I am lookin for either a 12- 16ft bumper pull stock trailer or a 2-3 horse bumper pull horse trailer. I have searched my rear off on all the websites like horse clicks and equine hits. I live in north east Texas. That leads me to ask if anyone knows of any websites? I am in desperate need of a trailer. My dad has a 28ft cattle trailer so that's not a good option for me. I'm looking for a cheap trailer like $1,500 or less In okay to good shape really need a tack holder but I can always fix one up in Ag Please I need websites, If you want you can look for trailers but that makes me feel lazy because I could just as easy find what I'm looking for if i could just have the website. THANKS IF YOU HELPED ANY!!!!!!!!!
What do you think about this horse? Well I have been searching for a horse and I think I have found the perfect one for me. He is beautiful, at my level and is in my price range. I am no expert on conformation and stuff so I was wondering if you experienced horse women/men can help me. His name is Merlin, he is a 16 yearold 16.1hh black thoroughbred. Here are the links: Here is his add on equine hits:http://www.equinehits.com/horses-for-sale/horse-198509 and here is his other add that shows a video of him: http://www.myequinesales.com/horsesforsale.html He is the one at the bottom of the page named Merlin. They say he roars, will that be a major issue? I am planning to do a little jumping, but nothing over 2'3'' and probably not even that high. Do you think he would be suitable for that? I am not completely sure that I will be buying a horse yet so this isn't the horse i will be seriously considering, just an option. So please give me your opinions. Thanks! Wish i were riding- roaring is a problem with the respatory system that makes them make snorting or "roaring" noises at the canter or gallop. 3wishes- so it would hurt him to do w/t and a little bit of canter and jumping? I wasnt planning on galloping him or anything.

Does the Virginia Equine Liability Act protect me if my horse were to get loose and injure/kill someone? Does the Virginia Equine Liability Act protect me if my horse were to get loose and hit a car and injure/kill someone or otherwise cause damage to someone else's property? This would assume no negligence on my part - i.e. safe fencing, but some sort of freak accident where the horse got loose, or say I was out on a trail ride and my horse spooked and got loose from me, etc. I am getting ready to rent a barn and the landlord does not want to get sued if something happens. I am a professional horse trainer with a bachelor's in equine science, so
Equine worms? I bought a pony from auction a month ago. I hit her up with a double dose of strongid. I normaly hit these auction horses up with Equimax and reworm in a month but I already had strongid in the cupboard. So its been 30 days and I rewormed ALL my guys with Equimax on sunday. This morning I go out to do my chores and I came across manure with lots of red worms in it. Actualy looks like red larvae. Its about 1/4" to 1/2" long. So I'm checking all the poops and found it in only a few piles. So now I want to know who pooped it so I had poop watch this morning. Finally after a hour the pony goes and I run over and sure enough, it was her. Took the fecal to the vets office and the secretary who does the fecals had no clue what it was. ME EITHER!! I have seen tape, and seen pin worms. So I'm waiting for the vet to call me and thought I would test your brain. I can't find any pictures on the internet. I'm thinking its a small red worm. What do you think? Mulereiner* LOL I'll post it when he calls AJMOMMY* I found that page also but where there is supposed to be a pic, the page doesn't work :( Thanks though LISA ** Thanks for the pic ** It is redworms and he did a fecal on her and it was parasite free, so I just finished wiping them out :) I love new experiences**
Equine lower back pain- any experience with? My horse hurt her back last year, was given 5 months off on pasture, then slowly went back to work. I went out yesterday, warmed her up both ways, all 3 gaits no problem and asked for lateral work to the right and she almost threw me- which she never tries to do. In case it was misbehaving, I tried left lateral work- perfectly fine, all 3 gaits. I asked for the right again- she still did a leg yield when I asked (eager to please), but went left when I cued right. She has known how to do leg yields correctly for 5 years now. I got off and looked at her back- tissue swelling on right side L1-L2 area, and she slightly flinched at the touch. I called the vet- she is on bute now, vet coming out Friday morning. She also has a hard bump right above her spine in that little groove, which she got in the back injury last year. I went online and looked up things at horse.com- supraspinous ligament injury seems the most likely, since this is a reoccurring thing. What probably caused it last year: she spooked, jumped a rock, I hit my head on a thick branch and fell heavily back into the saddle, and severely messed up my lower back. I think her symptoms started about that time. I looked up back pain signs, and according to the signs, it has been going on for a while, because what I wrote off as just normal stiffness to one side are common signs of back pain. I feel awful, but at least someone is looking at it now. My mare has an extremely high pain tolerance. Anyways, if it is a ligament injury, chance of complete recovery is very slim, and there is a good chance it will happen again. If muscle, may or may not. Treatments suggested (but not proven to work) were regular chiropractic, massage or acupunture sessions to loosen things up. Anyone deal with reoccuring back pain? How do you treat/ deal with? I originally thought it was a right stifle issue, but whatever kink that she had in that resolved itself after I started putting her back to work, and she can easily stretch out both hind limbs, and flex them completely with no hesistation. She is not visibly lame at any gait and not short strided, she even still rounded up fine the day I noticed the injury. Lateral work was harder for her to the right since her reintro into work 6 months ago , but she could do it, she would just get stuck sometimes. Left half pass and leg yields were flawless, and still were yesterday I am going to call a vet- not local, but they come here, that does chiropractic and accupuncture and see if she what she thinks, and when she thinks could start working. I know not until the swelling and acute pain goes down, but not much else.
What to feed my 17 year old mare? Well she has hit her senior age and I want to change her diet. She is fine on plain pasture and hay during the summer. But in the fall and winter she needs a good feed. She is used for light riding. Brands, info, approximate price, opinions, and stuff like that. She has good teeth, is on pasture, and eats plenty of good quality hay. Thanks, Equest.equine And yes i know a senior pelleted feed but i would like to know which brands to consider or avoid
bucking 4 year old??? My daughter's 4 year old bucked her off AGAIN this week and she's on crutches this time. He has dumped her three times now (now once was my girls fault). She is aware that when he gets excited he will sometimes try to throw a buck and she's always been prepared. This time she said it was if he wanted her off right then and there. My husband (an equine vet) palpated his back and he was extremely sore right where the back of the saddle hits on his back so we now know that's what happened BUT my question is : Since he threw her this time and she couldn't get back on, what's to stop him from thinking anytime he wants to do this he can. She is losing her confidence quickly and that can't happen. She lunges him for 30 minutes prior to riding to get any excess energy out as it is. She's an experienced rider just not as experienced with babies. I am stuck with this guy and to be honest can't blame him for this one either. If I hurt that bad, I wouldn't want someone posting on me. MORE INFO: He's not a bad boy. This is the only time he seemed purposeful in getting her off-other times, he's just excited. Not mean spirited at all BUT we don't want him thinking that he can do this. Should she be on a lunge line for a while (once she can get back on that is)? Working with a trainer right now is sporadic because the trainer is in school. Should I just send his happy butt off to training board, but since she can't ride right now, she really needs to be involved in that also, correct? EDIT: He's having acuputure treatment on Friday to help with the back pain and I am getting him fitted for another saddle next week BUT I am afraid that he's now learned he can try and dump her so any suggestions in that regard. Once the pain issue is straightened out, I want her to be able to get on him without him thinking I can get you off. EDIT: I did want to make it very clear that this horse was in pain during this event and I feel not mean spirited in any way. When my hubsand evaluated his back, he all but hit the ground when palpated so I 100% believe this buck was pain related.
He was hit in the back by fragments of an exploding bomb. His skin is numb in the center of his buttocks....? and along the entire posterior side of a lower limb, but there is no motor problem at all. One of the following choices is the most likely site of his nerve injury. Chose and explain: a) a few dorsal roots of the cauda equine; b) spinal cord transection at C6; c) spinal transection at L5; d) femoral nerve transected in the lumbar region.
Does anyone know ??? I want to find out what States have been hit the hardest by major flooding or even drought, effecting the well being of Equine's ????
Is there a way for me to increase viral titres in this experiment and is the yeast having an effect on titre? Hi folks undertaking a project on the virucidal efficacy of disinfectants for my undergrad but I've hit a few walls. I'm working with equine viruses, EHV1, EAV and a rhino prep, both the EAV and rhino preps grew to a decent enough titre for me, the rhino fully up to 10 to the minus 5 and the EAV the same - the EHV1 in my prep work grew up to the same also but now doesn't seem to be reaching the same levels. And it all seems to have slowed down (ie the virus growth) since the introduction of yeast to the test (I'm using it to simulate dirty conditions) I did find a paper that backs this up. But after setting up plates last week to compare virus grown with yeast and without (all other things equal) there seems to be little or no difference. All ideas and or help would be greatly appreciated - this is all new territory for me and even for some of my more experienced colleagues whom wouldn;t normally deal with this area. Regards
Mom is mean doesnt care, and dad is the same. help pleaase? sorry this is so long. Ok, I am 14 years old my mom is about to turn 41 and my sis is 19. My parents were divorced when i was about 2 or 3, and i stayed with my mom and sis and didnt see him again (my dad) till i was about 5 and then he just dissapeared again and i didnt see or hear from him for 10 years, a couple months ago we went to go find him and he was nice about it and we met up. My dad is wealthy, and he still lacks to pay my mom for my child support at all. he just doesnt seem to care about me, when i met him i just couldnt help but feel angry, he was nice to us but after that i havent heard from him in a while again. I try to call him but he wont answer i leave him voicemails im always trying to call him, especially tryed to call him on fathers day and he didnt answer me. I don't know what i did wrong for him to act like that. I felt angry and nausueas when i went to go meet him even though he was being nice, the part that hurt was when he asked me "so how old are you?" and I felt like a stranger when he asked that. Well lets get on with it soo my mom has never been a very good parent, She would beat up my Sister and yell at her and never care about her or me. All she wanted to do was have sex & party with her boyfriend that commited suicide. God help the man, i dont understand why she didnt stay with my dad, instead she went with a that boyfriend that abused her then did suicide. This was 4 years ago, shes over it now but it kinda got worse after that she would beat on my sister because my sis and I werent very nice to him because he would abuse and hit my mom. I was there to witness her ex's enraged fits and he bruised and slapped and punched her, i ran outside to my friend/neighbors house and cried i didnt know if i should call the cops because i was too scared. Soo well my mom was kinda blaming my sis for his passing away because we were not that nice to him. My sis has called CPS (child protective services) TWICE on my mom when they had a bad fight and my mom really beat her up. but its my mom who causes the fight. Soo after all this time once my sis hit 18 she got tired of that abuse and moved out to her boyfriends house. Now I am left here. To take the yelling and screaming and put downs. My mom likes to crush peoples dreams, for instance, I want to be a Equine Veterinarian because i love horses more than anything in the world, if they didnt exist idk what wouldve became of me. So i told her and she tells me "oh please.. Your Not Smart Enough" (to be an equine vet) shes always calling me fat and i only way 110 pounds. She pokes at me and tells me im Worthless and Good For Nothing. All she does is tell me Shut the fuck up when im trying to talk to her about her behavior. She was arrested for a DUI a couple months ago and was only in prison for a day, and now 3 weeks ago was very sick and had to go for a week to the hospital for Pancreatitis (idk how to spell it) and i had to be tossed around my loved family that she hates. She hates the whole family I am serious, only because they helped call CPS because she was hitting my sis. Everyone thinks my mom is an alchohol addict, she cant go a day without it. Me and my mom are always fighting and It doesnt help that my dad doesnt care and My mom seems like a minor gold digger though. Well i dont even really see my mom much anymore she doesnt appreciate me. One time she told me "stfu and stop annoying me,il be way happier without you here" im still living with her but shes not here most of the time, i understand that she works but shes always leaving me alone and going to concerts and clubs, Sexting guys and sleeping around, partys with her friends, getting drunk, coming home wasted etc. I mean I understand she has work but when she gets back she goes partying or goes straight to bed and its barely like 5PM and She gets mad when i ask her not to go out. I feel like im growing up to fast and i have to raise myself and clean all day & (im on summer vacation right now) i have to cook for myself everyday. I love my mom with All my heart and sometimes we have our mother and daughter moments but idk i feel sad all the time. Somethings always missing. I dont know if i can say that I love my dad, I assume i do but i think he doesn't Or maybe, I really feel and i think i know in my heart that hes a good guy, but idk whats wrong with him it seems like hes just avoiding us. /: I'm sorry this was soo long it doesnt even really cover all of the stuff that has happend. What do you guys think i should do about it? /: please help? I know sorry its super long writing it took forever too. and yeah she left my dad for that guy. /x
Do most jockeys have a college education? I'm another one of those jockey wannabes, but I am actually going to attend Chris McCarron's NARA. However, my parents want me to get a bachelor's degree in equine business management first, then attend the Racing Academy. I'd be hitting the track at 25, maybe older. Is that too old? I only want the associate's degree I'd get from the jockey college. My mom insists that racehorse owners and trainers prefer to hire educated jockeys. I've been told by a jockey that degrees have little to no meaning at the track. I believe that the guys who win a lot, have the right connections, and ride well are the ones getting "live" mounts. Who's right? Between two jockeys who are equally good riders, would the more educated one get the horse? Any advice on the college predicament would be greatly appreciated Well, Eddie D, I was considering posting this in the Careers section, but I thought the Horse Racing community would be able to give me better answers.
what do u think of this? Scientists predict that the daily addition of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, combined with daily removal of large portions of the world’s forests, will raise the earth’s average temperature by several degrees in the next century. This in turn will raise the level of the sea and potentially create significant changes in weather patterns on a global scale. As we move into the future, many climatologists expect that most of the United States will warm. What we do not know yet is how to scientifically predict which parts of the nation will become wetter or drier. We do know there is likely to be an overall trend toward increased precipitation and evaporation, and more intense weather systems, in the form of violent rainstorms, blizzards and sun-baked, drier soils. Sea levels have ALREADY risen approximately 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) worldwide in the last century, due to melting mountain glaciers and ocean expansion from warmer ocean temperatures. and if sea levels continue to increase that will cause a change in the tide pattern and moving belts resulting in more Tsunami's. possible ones will be hitting New york and as for LA well u guys have the andreas fault line to worry abt and the pacific rng of fire which volcanoes are already showing signs of life. so alot more earthquakes and erruptions for u guys. and any other places around the coast lines r screwed unless your on the mile high city. and even then im sure something else will come after us. and natural catastrophies arent the only things we need to worry abt warmer climates will increase the mosquito population bc of the ideal conditions for the insect. This will then increase the transmission of diseases such as * Eastern equine encephalitis * Japanese encephalitis* West Nile virus* Western equine encephalitis Dengue Fever Malaria Rift Valley Fever Yellow Fever and many others that im sure will start to pop up. and the warmer climates might even make more diseases pop up i mean we already have the The H5N1 virus is jumping species and it is mutating. On June 9 they killed 13,000 geese in Western China, It is only a matter of time before it begins to jump from human to human. were going to be looking at another pandemic like in 1918's influenza pandemic. so warmer conditions ideal environments for disease spreading and outbreaks, natural catastrophies like Tsunamies, earthquakes, volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes ect. 1st off im 15 and well informed for my age and i take all of these facts seriously i care about the world i live in and it worries me i might have to live through all of these catastrophic events but hey we cant control everything so im not stressing all too much i know i have to die sooner or later so all the more reason to enjoy my life to the fullest and BITCH i didnt copy and paste all of it, i well researched this and put it together myselfand my 2 scents are written all overthis, and i am thinking for myself this is what i believe will happen plus my earthscience teacher told me so too. SO Who WANT IT?!! duces
help with my mom treating me very badly ? I'm 14 years old turning 15 this year, my dad doesn't live with us and i hardly have any contact with him and my mom has many problems , she yells at me curses at me for no reason, even tried to hit me once. She is an alchoholic and once got a DUI. She treats me badly and is negative and has nothing to look up to. She always crushes all the dreams i have. for instance i have a deep passion and love for horses i have been riding them and showjumping for about 8 years, iv'e always wanted a horse of my own and i want a career involved in horses. I allso was thinking of being an Equine Veterinarian and my mom tells me "no your not smart enough" and i told her that i allso wanted to be a proffesional equestrian when i grow up she tells me "be realistic". Those are my dreams and it angers me that she crushes them. My sister moved out at 18 the first chance she got because she was treated badly and hit as well. Now i just live with my mom and sometimes out of nowhere she see's a little bit of the house dirty and she starts screaming at me and cussing also in spanish. I always have to clean the house and take all her rambling about me being a "shitty daughter" and sometimes she tells me "f**** you" . I'm realizing that her attitude is rubbing off on me i used to be the sweetest and worry some kid ever because i was little and didn't realize what she was doing. Now sometimes i get mad and snap at people or be rude without even realizing it just because we had fought like usual and i was mad. I can't invite family or hardly even my sister because she hates them all because they see that she's wrong. i had to miss my aunts wedding and now my couzin's is coming up and she won't let me go because she doesn't like them. They're trying to reach out to her but she just is rude to them and i love them and she turns them down. I've tried talking to her about all these thing but she just gets mad and doesn't listen. Once i move out hopefully, ..she is going to stay all alone by herself. she has no rich boyfriend anymore because he stole all her money and committed suicide ! (i know crazy huh?) . this was about 3 years ago. I don't wanna turn into the same rude person as her and I'm trying to save myself. Oh and i have never disrespected or said anything mean to my mother. One moment she can be fine and then just start screaming at me out of the blue. Thank goodness for my best-friend she has helped me get though these things i knoow this is really long but this doesn't cover even all of the stuff that has happend. suggestions please help ? thank you guys. and yes but i can't move with my sister she can't afford to take care of me )': and my sister already reported her to CPS (Child protective services) but we told the lady that nothing was going on so we wouldn't go for an orphanage, she was seeing a therapist but she stopped going. if we report CPS on her again it's going to start a lot of problems again. )':
how can i break him from his barrel obsession? i have a 14 year old ottb he came off the track last year i was working with him english and he does really well walk trot canter so i decided to start training him western the girl i got him from didn't really do any training the 3 months she had him she just did down and back every single day with him so when you put a western saddle on him he gets all geeked up. he has a VERY z\sensitive mouth he uses a rubber snaffle for english so i bought him this bit http://www.tractorsupply.com/equine/tack/bits/milepost-sweet-iron-breaking-horse-bit-4007559 he does really well with it i even got him to do a slow western jog with it it seemed a little harsh so i was gonna try a lighter bit. I was planing on doing a barrel run after we got done training as a reward because he loves to run barrels well i WAS almost done with his training session i aked him to canter he took of full gallop down the arena around the last barrel and kept going he ran right through the bit but he finaly stoped once he hit the fence i took down the barrels tryed it agin same thing but around the spot where the barrel was. What my question his how do i get him to stop doing that and canter . He works around barrels all the time english he doesent even look at the barrel so what should i do
If you were me, what would you do? I just got back from college, and I want a horse again, and dream of spending the summer riding.(this would be the third horse I've owned in my life so far). In some ways, I know what I want, but I guess if I really knew I wouldn't be facing this dilemma. Okay, I have always been hopelessly passionate about the Arabian breed, and find unimaginable pleasure in even just reading about their history and being around them. I work at an Egyptian Arabian breeding farm and not a single one of the broodmares is rideable and the rest are weanlings and yearlings. But I am so fascinated by them that I just love being around them and spending time with them. True, pure Arabs like them are horses like no others I have ever seen. The intuition and spirit just blows me away. Needless to say, I have been dreaming since I was a young teenager of owning a pure Arab with top bloodlines like one of the ones I work with. Mind you, they are all $15K and up in price where I work when they leave as babies, so I never actually figured out how I'd get one, but I dreamed of it anyhow. My other passion is riding. Not showing or performance or anything, but trail riding, and even arena riding. Most of all, those long bareback canters . . . My last two horses, due to time and circumstances and one of them being "green", I have not yet gotten to have a horse that wasn't a project, that I could just jump on and hit the trails. I've spent hours and hours on friends' horses like that though, and often envied them, and wondered why I always end up with the project horses? I know I enjoy it, but . . . Anyway, so here I am again, with the chance to start fresh with a new horse. I know it has to be an Arabian. No question there (it's a "me" thing, can't help it). So I started looking. Now I have more $ than I've ever had previously when buying horses, but it's still not much. Like $500-$700 at the MOST. But with the current economy I decided I should be able to find something. So far, what I have found has left me extremely frustrated, confused, and bewildered. I have a knack for finding horses and falling in love with them with no good reason. The things I have found fall into about 3 categories. I found a few horses that are run-of-the-mill Arabians, nice and cute but not registered, or if they are registered just not spectacular examples. But for a riding horse, why should I care right? But they are between about 6 and 12 and some are finished and some are green, but for me they would be nice riding horses. Next group are nice-ish and registered Arab colts and fillies about 4 years old. Some are not broke and a couple are started under saddle, but barely. I actually wanted to start my next horse this spring and ride it this summer, so that would be great and make sense. Third group is what is throwing me for such a loop. I happened to come across a barely 2 year old filly(turns two end at the of April). She is drop dead gorgeous with her jaw-dropping ancestry and seemingly the entire glory of her Arabian ancestry traced into every chiseled feature on her face. She just captivates me. She is everything I have ever dreamed of, but she is too young to start this summer. Part of me says, "who cares girl!" This is the horse you've always wanted! This is your equine soulmate! Just LOOK at her!" But the owner has agreed to sell her to me for $770. She is worth in the thousands, so this is a chance of a lifetime perhaps. This pushing my budget, but sometimes I think I'd do anything to have her. But if I buy her instead of one of the not-so-nice backyard Arabs, I will spend yet another year riding someone else's horses, and just playing with and training my own. I was so determined to finally end up with a riding horse. And for once not have a project and have to WAIT and WAIT. But this will be my only horse, and I plan on this being my only horse until it dies. I wanted to find that special horse . . . the "soulmate". I want to commit, and so I want to get what I actually WANT instead of just something that "works". Something that I love so much that I want to pour every spare minute into. For those of you who have ever waited on a young horse, or maybe been faced with a similar situation, what did you do? Will spending more than I can afford to on a horse I (once again) can't ride be worth it in the end? How much do you trust your gut? Every sensible thing in me says pass this filly up....she won't even be 3 till next April! But then why do I find myself coming back to her in my mind over and over.....wondering how I can get the money.... And those "nice" little Arabs ready to spend the summer trail riding with me....just can't seem to catch my eye. Am I not giving them enough of a chance? Am I letting my heart run away with me? What will it be.....common sense and fun for the summer..... or lifelong dreams and "the gut feeling"?
Is this horse abuse/neglect? Well, when we go to... I can't remember the place... Well, when we were driving to the 'place', we passed by old stable and then passed my old stable is this small piece of land with a house and it needs a bit of weeding and mowing.. Anyways, it has no fence and then the last time we drive past that land, we saw a horse on a short lead rope only tied to something and STILL NO FENCE. He could break that rope and run into the street and get hit! I don't want that to happen to the baby! And we were too far away to see what he looked like really but to me, he looked like he was covered in dirt and... it didn't look like proper horse care. Now he could have been a dapple grey or something and it looked like dirt but still! It didn't even look like much land... I guess. So I was wondering, should I call the HSPCA (Houston SPCA) and report it, or let it be...? I want to be an Equine Vet in the future because I can't stand to see horses suffer and when they are, I try everything to help them. So I feel bad for not doing anything to help this possibly neglected horse... Just, I'd really appreciate advice because I'd feel stupid reporting something that might not be bad.... Even though it looks bad. Thanks guys! Alrighty... We'll probably drive by again but I'm still telling ya... It wasn't that big of apeice of land.. Haha! Well, I might not call because you guys might be right... about the tethering or whatever. (: Thanks. :D
I'm walking like a Cowboy >.< How do I stop my legs from hurting after a ride? I took a break from riding for 2 months and I don't recommend it. I usually ride once or twice a week and I have been for the past 7 or 8 years or so, mostly English. So I was dying to get on the back of anything equine, obviously, a couple of days ago I rode this lovely gelding Desi, with a HUGE flowing trot and a very flowy canter. The ride was amazing considering Desi was as rusty as I was, but as soon as my feet hit the ground, it started. The inside of my thighs and my lower back are KILLING ME! Before the ride I tried stretching out because I knew it would hurt later. I'll also admit that I'm not in great shape, not muscle-wise anyways. I've tried taking asprin, I've had baths with epsom salts, Rub A535 warming AND cooling, tried stretching again (painful). I'm 17 and I'm hobbling around like a 96 year old. It hurts to get up, sit down, bend down, walk, and stand. I should really clean my room and do laundry right now but it hurst so much I can't bring myself to do it! :( However, I'm not completely bed-ridden, I'm trying to move around as much as I can because my dad told me that lying around when you're in pain won't help. This isn't the first time I've been in such pain just from a little ride, but it's the first time I've thought about asking! Does anyone have any tips? Hopefully I can get some tips before I go riding again tomorrow :)
4yr old horse stifle injury? I bought a 4yr old QH mare in May of this year. Last October, at the Quarter Horse futurity, she was getting out of her stall, and onto cobblestones in the aisle. She tripped and pulled her stifle. She was put into her stall at the barn CONSTANTLY until we bought her in May. I took her to two shows (spaced a month apart), than took her to my coaches after the second show. I didn't have enough time to prep her enough for the training that she was going to be going through, yet I knew my coach would take good care of her. I went out once a week to rider her and see how she was doing. After two weeks, we brought her home on the Friday, to take her to a show on Sunday. I rode her that Saturday and noticed she was stumbling and feeling funny on her right hind. I got off and noticed that she was lame and picking it up higher than she should. I took my tack off and cold hosed it down. I gave my coach a call and she was devastated. She didn't know what happened. My mare loaded and unloaded no problem. For what I could see, she didn't do anything funny. The only thing I noticed, was when I went to pick up that foot, she wouldn't let me. She suddenly picked it up and snapped my wrist. We talked to my coach’s vet, who dealt with her in October. He gave us some blistering medication to rub on it (I don't know what it is called) and told us to put it on every day until it blisters. Every day we went down and walked her for 5minutes. Than worked our way up to 10minutes. After about two weeks of hand walking, we got our vet out to x-ray her stifle. Everything was fine skeletally. He told us she was growing really fast (she shot up 2inches since we bought her to when she pulled her stifle) and her ligament just kept getting caught over the bone. He told me I could start to lunge her for 20minutes, and to try and keep it at a slow jog, mostly with her right stifle on the inside of the circle. After a month of doing the hand walks and lunging, also rubbing down with liniment, I started to ride her again. For 2weeks, I jogged her slowly, and did a lot of walking, to build up her trust and confidence again. Than the week after, I started to ask her to extend a bit. Two weeks ago, we had our chiropractor come in to look at her. Something was still not right. She gave her a good going over, and said her pelvis was out. And the worst thing that could have been done, was for her to be in her stall - we think her pelvis came out when she slipped on the cobblestones - the chiropractor put her pelvis back, and said she wanted to come back in two weeks. She also advised that I walk and jog her over trotting poles. The October 26th (Monday) she came back out and said she was doing much better. She seems to now be sore in her front right. There is no sort of heat, swelling, anything. We have clamped her feet and done everything to find out where it is. I'm getting really depressed and i don't know what to do! I'm almost ready to call it quits and pack it in with horses. Is there anything anyone can tell me to calm my fears? I'm getting prepared to start looking for another horse. My family is concerned that I'm going to loose interest in the horses as I can't ride, and to be honest, I'm almost starting to loose interest. Have we given her enough time to heal? Is there anything you can suggest? We have my coaches vet coming out on the 24th of November. Please let me know if you think that we have handled this right, and please don't tell me I was stupid into throwing her into training so early. Anyone who bought her would have done the same thing. Thanks in advance, Myself, Parents, and of course the horse PS - We are in Ontario. So any collages/universities/schools etc. need to be in THAT area Where we are, we get hit hard with snow. I don`t want to just throw her out to paster with her shoes on, and so she forgets about me. The chiro we have is an equine chiro. She has her lisence and everything. Also, we have had two vets deal with her. The one from my coach, and the one who x-rayed her. The one from my coach is an 'old school vet', where as the one who x-rayed her is a 'new school vet' I DIDN'T ride her in ANY shows after she pulled up lame that one day. I had hosed her stifle down and put her in her stall and did nothing to her until the next day when my coachs' vet got us the blistering medication. I would NEVER ride my horse if she is sore like that. If I ride her when she is sore, I find out where it is, and figure out if she can keep going, or if we have to stop.
Is this abuse or am I overreacting ? I don't know if this is really abuse or if I'm just overreacting. My mum doesn't really buy food so there's never any in the house and she lets my medication run out lately. Shes at work and leaves me home to school myself with resources I find on the net because she can't use the computer or afford workbooks and even if we could we can't get to the supply shop because we don't have a car any more. She never talks to me when she is home because she says she's to tired from work (even though she only works 3 hours a day cleaning) and also can't help me with schoolwork I find hard since she didn't finish high school. I wish I could move because she yells at me for not cleaning (even though I'm bed ridden) and for everything else and then says I should just move to my dad's but I can't because he's got 1 to 5 years to live and is going to jail soon anyway and I can't run away because I don't want to leave my dog because she hits him and I can hardly get out of bed anyway so if I did my fibromyalgia, patella femoral, equines, depression and circulation would get worse because I couldn't get meds. I'm 14 years old I can't talk to a guidance councilor because I'm going to be home schooled until the next school year in February because I was in to much pain at school.
TRUE OR FALSE: Mister Ed- the famous talking horse- was not even a horse { in fact, he wasn't even a Mr.} ?? Mr. Ed.... the most famous equine from the syndicated series from the sixties was not even a horse ... The horse that they were to use for the opening pilot of the show kept missing his mark and would never hit his cues... so in despair not knowing what to do....they found a solution a zebra from one of the local trainers from a nearby jungleland park was perfect for the job -- never missed a cue but what about the stripes?? or that he was a she?? to cover for the smaller stature forced perspective had been used as well as smaller sets .... the mane was fake as well as pins to set the ears apart ... head shots were used almost always ... and the fact that the show was black and white meant not seeing the stripes that are so prominent for promos and publicity stills a real horse was used -- but for the whole duration of the show "Amelia" the zebra was the star The correct answer to this one is "False" Mr. Ed was indeed a horse of course... and male The "urban legend" about a female zebra taking it's spot was given life on the internet.... This is one the most ridiculous stories yet -- but people actually believe it the differences between a zebra and a horse are readily apparent just by looking... it would be almost impossible to make a zebra look like a horse --- maybe a burro - or a mule --- but not a horse... so where did this story come from?? http://www.snopes.com/lost/mistered.asp the lesson learned here is not to take everything at face value...
Okay, question on your guys answer? I'm not feeding enough? Original Question: "It's raining outside and he's shivering outside in the rain. How do I get him to go and stay into the barn before he freezes to death? I've already tried putting food in it but he rather stay outside with one goat that's in a different pen. How do I get him to go into and stay in the barn without locking him in? My parents won't let me lock him in it." Answer: "he's a horse. horses prefer open spaces vs. confined spaces. also...the sound of rain hitting the roof of the barn (especially if it's metal) is very loud and his hearing is far better than yours....and the sound can scare him or bother his sensitive ears. also...if he's shivering, then you are not feeding him enough food at all. Feed him OUTSIDE where he is comfortable. And give him more food or better food (if you are feeding low quality hay). If the hay was quality and it was enough, your horse should NOT shiver. He needs to be fed better food or more of it on a regular basis. He's too thin. Thin horses shiver. Fat horses (or well fed horses) don't shiver." I am feeding him two flakes on alfalfa, one in the morning and one at night, and two scoops or Senior Equine, one if the morning and one at night. He eats all the oats, but doesn't finish off all the alfalfa, *ever.* He has also grained around 250 pounds with me, but lost all of his winter coat. Am I under feeding him? He was shivering, but it was also like 40 degrees and windy, and I'm sure that seems even colder without a winter coat. So *am* I feeding enough? I thought I was since he's gained all that weight and is still gaining weight. When I first got him (two months ago) you could count every single rib through a much thicker unhealthy winter coat. He eats it, just waits to do it through out the day instead of doing it all at one time.
Is it possible to live off of this? Once out of college I plan on owning my own barn. At first, I thought I'd have a smaller 15-20 stall barn of basically my own horses used for show and breeding while I worked as an equine vet to bring in cash, but now I'm changing my mind. What if I owned a 25 acre+ farm used for breeding and training? I would like to have at least 6 Arabian stallions of great pedigree lines and to use for showing (like Liberty) and I plan on paying $20-30,000 for each one. Also, I want to own a good 10 Arabian broodmares (of great pedigree lineage, too) and to sell their foals yearly. I want to have not a boarding/lessons facility but a training facility. Like train problem horses, start colts, etc. Of course, separate from the breeding part. And I will also have my personal show horses which I'll compete and hopefully hit top circuit and win futurity money and regular show money, too. Is it possible to make a living off of this? Not necessarily to make a profit, but to keep it all running. My husband will work as well which will provide, but if I have to I'll go back to my original plan. But I've seen it work for others, and most of the barn will be paid off so it's not like if business is bad then we'll loose our farm. Thanks! I don't plan on it now, it won't be for awhile. It's called planning! By the way, I am becoming an equine vet/chiro and farrier so those expenses are aside in caring for the horses.
I went and saw the blue eyed mare :D ....... videos taken, LOOK !!!!? It went AWESOME.... thank you everybody for the positive vibes and good luck, it obviously helped a lot! She was AMAZING.... and I couldn't have wished for it to be better. I am absolutely in love... I almost don't even want to go see the gelding now, but I guess logically... I oughta go see him anyways :-P She was great under saddle, and she has the most amazing personality on the ground... her owner was shocked at how well we got along... she kept trying to stop by me when she was lunging and everything... and when I got done riding her she put her head over my shoulder and was lipping my jacket... *melt, melt, melt*..... LOL! She's awesome. I took her over some ground poles too just for the heck of it, and it was her first time going over poles. She slowed and sniffed them at first, but then she went right over them and the next lap around, she acted as if she'd been doing it all her life! I got my camera working, although the battery is still a piece of sh*t... (I charged it all the way full before we left, and it was flashing the battery symbol/next to dead before we left. And I only took three videos!!!!). Anyways... lets see if I can get these uploaded, because I have real issues with trying to save videos onto my computer from this specific camera.... and this is my first time using youtube... ah... it's hard LOL. Okay, while I'm waiting for it to upload I'll also say that the owner was REALLY nice... we were chatting away and talking about random stuff and got into this big discussion on how cool equine color genetics are, etc... I don't know, she was just a really cool person LOL. We talked for way too long... I was there for nearly 3 hours lol... And she said that if I ever need to sell Glimmer (I'm getting ahead of myself - if I buy her!) then she will always be available to buy her back. So that's pretty reassuring... like an open ended trial period, really. Her farm was amazing... when we got there we had to talk into a box type of thing so she could grant us access and the automatic gate would open up, the barn was gorgeous, everything was top notch! She was perfect under saddle... super responsive and waiting my next cue every step of the way! She's great. UGH these are taking effing forever......... I got kind of car sick feeling on the way there, so when I got there I stopped at Dairy queen and got some ice cream (I was way ahead of schedule... dang lead foot!). The guy at dairy queen was looking at me strange, so I was starting to wonder if he thought recognized me from somewhere or something. Then when I was done I was going to go to the bathroom, and he followed me back there and asked me out!! LOL! I had to tell him I didn't live in the area.... I don't think he was my type anyways. Irrelevant, but I'm waiting on these GD videos to upload so I thought I'd toss that little story in here LOL. Here we go, they are uploaded.... please ignore my voice... I HATE how my voice sounds in videos LOL. It's all nasally sounding..not how it is in real life.... just mute it. lol. OH! By the way - she hit her head when she was at the trainers last week, and there is a big lump on the front of her face down between her eyes... she said she had the vet look at it and it's just swelling/bruise on the bone but it's not going to be a long term problem and it will go away on it's own. You can see it some in the video where she is free lunging and she comes running over to me, you can see it up close. Lunging....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gEDpJ0glho Riding (that's her owner, not me.... I did ride her, but I didn't want you guys critiquing me LOL!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuJ_u2oJ2jY Free lunging: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1AJrP_EcuM If the video says ''not yet processed'' or whatever, just check back later... they are being epically slow at getting uploaded. Uuggghhh So what do you think????? I'm almost hoping the gelding will buck me off so that I can get this one LOL!!!! I couldn't have asked for a better time. It was awesome.... YES that was the owner's daughter, and she was annoying the living daylights out of me, chatting her head off and asking me bunches of questions while I was trying to focus LOL. The ground was VERY hard - it was basically a limestone lot, and the ground was hard and uneven, which may be why she seemed ''off'' in the video under saddle. Oh and yes, that mare in the background was trying to stir up trouble. She's due to foal in less than a month, and very, very bitchy at the moment LOL. She was chasing around another horse in the pasture trying to beat the snot out of it. Poor thing. Hmmm don't know why you thought she would be white, but alas she is a bay with one blue eye and one eye that is half blue/half brown. I'm sorry Anna! I tried to upload it to flickr but it kept cutting off at 3 minutes in, and each of these are much longer than that.. So I couldn't do flickr. I would email them to you but yahoo only allows attachments of 25kb or less, and those videos are much longer than that. So sorry... but I DID remember you LOL!
What do you think of this? Ok so me and my mom are starting an equine rescue. We are going to save horses ponies and donkeys from slaughter houses and low level auctions. However we also want to help people see horses as living creatures that should be loved and cared for not just as tools to be used. This is a piece from the brochure we are making, what do you think? Any advice is welcome but please no comment on my views because they wont change. Thanks in advance. All the work that we do is based on our life philosophy that horses and all living creatures deserve both love AND respect. We believe in Natural Horsemanship and that ALL horses deserve adequate food, water, shelter, and medical/hoof care as well as love, attention, kindness, and understanding and should never be the victim of the angers and frustrations of its rider. All too often horses are treated as simply a commodity to be used and if they do not have value as athletic highly trained show animals they are kicked hit yelled at and disposed of as if they are a piece of worthless machinery. We believe that the old, unbalanced un-athletic injured or untrained horses have just as much value as the flashy pushbutton show ponies and should be given the same treatment. One day we observed a stiff and sore untrained old horse who was put in an advanced lesson that was far above his capabilities. He did not understand what was being asked of him and as a result he was brutally kicked, beaten with a crop and cursed out by his rider. We speak against this type of behavior. Abuse is not simply restricted to a horse starving in a kill pen abuse is all around the horse world. Note: i have nothing against flashy show horses or showing, i myself m looking for a showhorse. i just believe that the horses who are incapable of showing still deserve respect and love.
UPDATE!!! TO "OPINIONS ONLY" QUESTION? I asked a question a few days ago about only needing a opinion from everyone as to a horse being suitably broke even if it does not ride in a bit. He is my new horse, and here is what I wrote: ...... Here is my dilemma, I got a new horse about a month ago. He is a 15 yr old quarter horse gelding, very good conformation, great to work with, great attitude, I mean a all around good horse. I have not noticed any bad vices what so ever, even in a month. I have had him saddled twice, first time, he would not go forward, only back, I mean would not move only played with the bit. I am a equine massage therapist and he gets body work daily, so I know this IS NOT a issue. Well I examined his teeth and called the dentist immediately and was done three days later. My dentist tolled me upon exam that he had a injury when he was 4 yrs of age to the mandible but will not affect anything and he is still sound. He was then floated, filed and had a bit seat put in. I saddled him again tonight for the second time. Keep in mind the horse has not been rode in five or six years, and bucked previous owner off at that time. I proceeded to put the bit {smooth snaffle} in his mouth, he welcomed it nicely too. When I got on him he went plum crazy, bucking and crow hopping, rearing up and backing up. So I got down and took out the bit, I decided to ride him in just his halter, because he does so well with ground work and yields to nose pressure wonderfully. I got back on him and he loped off like nothing, I had him side-passing, spinning off his front and back end, backing up and much more and all at a very collected gate. He acted as though he has been rode everyday, I was amazed as to the fact he might just make a good cow horse after all { cows all around us too while riding }. When I tolled my fiance he tolled me that the horse is not broke then if he won't ride in a bit. I wanted to just go get a bit-less hack and that be that, but he swears that a horse is not broke if you can not ride it in a bit. I don't understand, doesn't this make for a better more collected horse. I mean not to have all that metal in the mouth. What should I do? Force him to ride in a bit {not, lol, I am joking}? I am a third generation cowgirl and know how to train and ride very well, and I definitely know a lot about horses {not to sound high on my horse} everyone I know calls me a horse whisperer. My fiance is great with horses too but we always have different out looks on this stuff. I guess my question after the explanation would be....... Is a horse broke with or with out a bit? Or does a bit really mean the horse is "dead" broke? SO HERES THE UPDATE: A lot of you came back with very positive answers and I really aprecciated the answers, just thought I would update ya'll on his progress. Well i went and purchased a hack with a rope noseband, and have been riding him the past few days in that and he is doing great. He is so leg driven it is amazing. I would really love to know who origanally trained this horse. He seems as though he was previously trained for some reining, cutting, and barrel racing. I took him in the back of the cattle pasture about 60 acres back, and rode for about 3 hours, after maybe 20 mins I had him working of my leg cues and climbing all over the deep creek that runs through the property, he was walking off 3ft or more drops into the water!!! It took some doing but he eventaully got over being scared and trusted me and just did it. He stops like a reining horse on that hack too. I had him in a trot and sat back in the saddle with light pressure on the nose and he stopped so fast he slid in about two steps length so fast I hit my saddle horn, I was not expecting his breaks to be that good at all!! I had him spinning off his back end and doing rollbacks. He works great in the hack. My fiance is eating his words right now and he hates that he was wrong. I have pushed him on some cattle also and had him cutting in no time. I did this in a open pasture by ourselves with our aussie. I think he will work just fine for branding day next month. Now I just need to try to throw a rope off him, but I don't think that will bother him either. So thats it just wanted to let everyone know that he does wonderfully on just a hack, and I love it!!! Thank you all once again for the support.
Is this child abuse or am I just being stupid? I don't know if this is really abuse or if I'm just overreacting. My mum doesn't really buy food so there's never any in the house and she lets my medication run out lately. Shes at work and leaves me home to school myself with resources I find on the net because she can't use the computer or afford workbooks and even if we could we can't get to the supply shop because we don't have a car any more. She never talks to me when she is home because she says she's to tired from work (even though she only works 3 hours a day cleaning) and also can't help me with schoolwork I find hard since she didn't finish high school. I wish I could move because she yells at me for not cleaning (even though I'm bed ridden) and for everything else and then says I should just move to my dad's but I can't because he's got 1 to 5 years to live and is going to jail soon anyway and I can't run away because I don't want to leave my dog because she hits him and I can hardly get out of bed anyway so if I did my fibromyalgia, patella femoral, equines, depression and circulation would get worse because I couldn't get meds and have no other family.

The search is on for horse trailers... wish me luck, I'm going to need it!? Yes, I did already post this but didn't quite get what I was looking for. Then, I messed up and the links didn't work! So, please, will you all help me one more time! I REALLY appreciate it! Okay, I know this is long but bear with me! I really need help! My parents and I are looking for our first horse trailer. I think my dad's got some vision of him in our truck with his rusty, old horse trailer in tow, the cowboy music blasting... So, these are what I'm looking at. Any comments? Which do you like best? Any that you think are asking too much? **Which ones do you think is the best deal?** That's the most important question, as money is tight these days for everyone. Charlie and I just need one for an occasional horse show, about a 20 min drive. And if you didn't notice from the adds, I live in Minnesota. Personally, I don't mind a little rust, as long as everything's solid. http://www.horsetopia.com/for-sale/local/trailers/l334354 http://www.horseclicks.com/trailers/tzdfml/ http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hnp/grd/1783079995.html http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/for/1747664026.html http://www.freehorseads.com/trailer/photo.php?adnum=13414 http://www.equinehits.com/cm~41025 I think the one on equine hits is kind of cute because it's actually very close to me and Charlie's showing color.
