Horse Health Hazards in Florida? im from ohio and moving my horse to florida, are there any health hazards from florida i should be aware of? please let me know
Horse health after colic surgery - please read.? I have a horse that had colic surgery two years ago. Two surgeries, actually. He ended up with a lot of scar tissue in his gut that caused a lot of colics in the 6 months after his surgeries. We changed feed and management, and he had over a year almost colic-free. (He had two minor colics that did not require a vet's attention). Now he has had two *very* serious colics in 3 weeks - both were twists. Here is my question: has anyone had an experience with a horse who has previously had colic surgery where there were serious complications much later, and after a period of health? Is this just bad luck or is his health deteriorating? Any experience anyone wants to share would be greatly appreciated. I am starting to wonder if he should be euthanized. I love this horse to pieces and I have a lot invested in him, emotionally and monetarily, but I don't want him to suffer needlessly. My vet will certainly be involved in the decision, and has been, but the ultimate decision is mine. I don't know anyone personally who has been in this situation and neither does he, so I am trying to gather information.

Easy to understand book on Horse Health? Can anyone recommend any easy-to-understand books on horse health. Suitable for the moderate beginner. My mum is taking care of my horses whilst I am away and I want her to be able to recognise signs of illness/injury and how to deal with them. I am fortunate enough to be on a very helpful livery yard full of people happy to oversee my horses whilst I am away (I'm going to be moving away for around 6 months). However, I just want to be sure that she knows what she's doing. She can recognise fairly obvious lameness and can pick up when "something" is wrong (for example a horse recently got mild spasmodic colic on the yard and she spotted it; being first to walk round onto the yard and then coming to get us saying "something's wrong with georgie!"). Can anyone recommend any titles? She is quite capable in that she can muck out, lead horses etc. but her knowledge of say, the causes and symptoms of colic is very limited. She doesn't know about causes of lameness (other than the obvious) or how to identify which area is causing lameness. Her knowledge of wound care is also limited, as well as identification and treatment of conditions such as mud fever etc. Cina99 - what a super duper book! I love it, I just feel the terminology used would be a bit on the complex side. It is my bible though!!
help with horse health? i have a 12 year old mare that i have had for about 3 years now and have never had any health problems with her but the past week i have noticed hives on her. they started out on her withers and shoulders and then spreaded all over her body. i thought she just had hives and another horse i have had got them before so i fed him flax. well i was going to try that with her then today i noticed that she is losing hair around her face. there is an animal that has been coming in the pasture that looks like it has the mange but i havent been able to kill it. could she have gotten that from the other animal and would that cause the hives? she isnt acting like anything is bothering her. i would take her to the vet but dont have the money right now. any help would bt very much appreciated.

I want to brush up on a lot of stuff i may run into here at the rescue and not yet faced, like my first experience with the colic yesterday. I have tons of books but after a severe blow to my brain believe it or not i can see better looking at the computer screen, my books will gather dust. I have glasses but that not the problem its how my brain receives information after the brain injury that screws up my vision when i read small line after line small print. Why did i just share that with you all??? So maybe a few of you have found the perfect website packed full of information. Thanks
Parents won't listen and could be bad for health of horse? Now that the grass is getting richer in nutrients, horses don't need hay as much, right? Well, my horse is proving that by not eating the hay I give her. My parents won't listen to me when I tell them that we don't need to feed her HALF as much anymore and if we do it could be bad for her. But the only thing they are worried about is the fact that they will have wasted all that money on hay last fall! They aren't at all concerened for my horses health! The thing that frusturates me most (other than the fact that my horse is getting extremely unhealthy because of them) is that I told them they didn't need to get all that hay! HELP!!!
Good horse health websites? I'm starting a class that teaches how to tell a healthy horse from an ill one, about different horses diseases, treatments, etc. Well I'm a pushover and like to research before. While I know TONS about horses, I'd still like to refresh my knowledge and maybe add more. So do you know any good websites?
How dangerous is a displaced intestine in a horse? The stable manager just called and told me that the horse who had colic last night was now diagnosed with a displaced intestine. She said they were trying to treat him with fluids, and if he didn't improve in three hours or so, they would ship him to Ohio State. ): I don't know a lot about horse health problems because we've been very lucky and hadn't had many. Please tell me if he has a good chance of survival or not.
Horse health question? My horse loses his balance, his back legs aren't working correctly and his front feet seem sore, He took some pain medication and is walking a little better but, What is wrong with him? and how do you fix this? One tip about the horse or horse health/management? Thought this would be just a little bit of fun for us horsy people :) If everybody who reads this question puts ONE interesting tip/fact that they know about horses, their health and ownership, or even riding (basically anything at all!), we can all come back and look at the answers everybody else has put. Then, everybody will learn something they didn't know before ^^ Try not to put the same answer as anybody else, but of course it can't be helped if you answer at the same time :p I know this should come under Polls and Surveys but in that section we wouldn't get the people with the right interests! Enjoy! :D

Horse Health Question? I just bought a horse last week at a horse auction. As soon as we got home she had this dry cough and greenish-yellow goo in her eyes. A couple days later her nose was running with the same greenish-yellow stuff. She seems like she has NO energy, but since I just got her I don't know if that is her normal self or not. I did contact her owners and they said she left their house in perfect condition but they were selling her because they have too many horses. I have not contacted the vet yet as I'm hoping this clears up. I don't want any responses about "how bad it is to buy a horse at a sale or that buying a horse at a sale carries risks such as this". I'm just curious if anyone else has been in this situation and what the prognosis was. Please help! She has been seperate from the other horses since she's got here. Thanks so much for all the great advice!
Horse Health? Is he safe? Ok. So there is a new horse at the barn. He is 14. He is a very short and chunky pony. With short legs. He does have Appaloosa. He has very short hooves. They also have a few cracks. So what is the best way to toughen up his hooves. They are so thin that a shoe probably couldn't be put on. Also he is a western pony. And is going to turned into a english school horse. His gait is currently very short and choppy. Due to his feet. He also bucks when he is frustrated. But he bucks very timidly. He's very loving. He will follow you around and never even think about eating grass. He is perfect to sit on in a field grazing. He is a very sweet horse. From what I've told you. Would he be any good at tricks? If so which ones. And how do you teach them. I hope you can help. He's free. But on trial. And I really think he could be a good horse once his weight evens out and his feet are better. Also if it was your choice would you keep him? He is fine at the walk. Which is all the beginners do. :) His saddle DOES FIT fine. And even though he is free. There is money to pay for anything he may need. We can easily afford whatever. He was just ridden by a four year old. And she runined his training Also. The farrier is coming out soon. And his hooves will be looked at. We have already done a lot of health things. And the typo in the first addtional detail. He was ridden by a four year old before we had him.
